One of the many folk groups that I belong to is the fruit filling folk group. This is just a fun way of saying that I am a produce clerk inside a grocery store. At this position I preform all tasks that have to do with vegetables and fruits. My job is also maintaining a clean and proficient work space and environment. In my position I fill all of the fruit and vegetables after they have been properly conditioned. I also have to clean the trays and racks that hold the produce while I am filling so that they will not build up dirt and grime. Cleaning the floors is also an essential part of my job. Many farmers turned their farms into corporations. One of the oldest produce corporations is Dole. Dole started out as a small pineapple stand. With more sales they began to expand business until they became large enough that they stated to can their goods. With this move they were then able to higher on more employees to work in the company. One of these employees was an engineer who created a machine that would peel and slice the pineapples. At the time they were known as self-service grocery stores. They noticed that the popularity of produce was continuingly growing. Many store owners bought produce from the farmers that they could sell in their stores. The grocery store incorporates both types of produce. The fresh produce straight from the farm and companies that sell their produce in packages. This is now the most popular way to obtain produce in today’s society. They began by only having one to two farmers providing the store with produce. As the stores grew and more demand came for produce, the stores reached out and acquired different products from different farmers. With different kinds of products, stores started to incorporate foreign produce into the mix. This attracted immigrants to shop at stores to obtain familiar foods that seemed to welcome them. Something else that the grocery stores started that quickly became very popular was completely organic produce. This didn’t become popular until later years when added hormones were given to food causing an uproar. The New York Times says, “Many of these items are new products that make it possible for busy people to eat a wholesome, healthy diet, low in fat, high in fiber, without having to spend three hours a day simmering beans.” And the demand for organic produce went from very little to almost more than normal
