Children that come from a single parent home “exhibit externalizing problems such as aggression, noncompliance, and conduct disorder” (Vafa & Ismail, 2009, p. 2). They also may internalize the problem which develops into “anxiety, depression, withdrawal, social problems, and may also develop a negative and distorted view of themselves and the world” (Vafa & Ismail, 2009, p. 2). It is important to teach parents positive parenting skills to reduce parent’s feelings of stress and depression. Sometimes a therapist may try to work with a child in the therapy room; however, the parents may not understand the techniques and skills that the child learns in the therapy room. Thus, the child goes home and forgets because the skills are not being enforced at home. With filial therapy, will participate in their child’s therapy session and learn how to continue to use the skills and therapeutic techniques at home.
