In Confucianism, the concept of order and balance to society was highly prioritized. However, in order for that to happen, teachings such as Xiao, also known as filial piety, and jen needed to be encouraged. Filial piety is the obedience and respect towards one's parents, elders, and ancestors. True intent and concern was expected to be carried out towards them. Confucius states that “when your parents are alive, serve them in accordance with the rituals; when they die, bury them in accordance with the rituals; offer sacrifices to them in accordance with the rituals.” (53/2.5). Confucius emphasizes that one must ensure that their parents have enough food to eat with the same level of attention and care that they may pay to pet.
