In this lesson Ms. Formoso was teaching her students about figurative language. Students have read some poems before, and now they will work in small group to complete an activity that involves figurative language. She begins by stating the objective and making sure the students understand it. She then activates prior knowledge, which provides scaffolding and allows the students to engage with the topic. She then guides the students through a discussion about poetry and figurative language. With these questions Ms. Formoso is making sure that students understand the concept and she is able to correct errors. In this lesson the teacher wanted the students to be able to understand the text and to answer right there questions. The teacher began the lesson by reading and explaining the objectives. After she explained the objectives, she activated background knowledge by asking the students to talk to their partners about question words. After the partners discussed this, the class came up with a list of words that are used to begin questions. Ms. Griego used the Think-Pair-Share to help the students work together to comprehend the text. She began by reading aloud the introduction and having groups work together to answer questions. She then had the groups complete an independent activity in which each group will read a portion of the text and will write grammatically correct questions that other classmates can answer. After the groups formulated the questions, the teacher had the presenter from each group read the questions aloud, so other students can find the answer in the text. I like the way Ms. Griego explained the objectives to the students and they way she model how to ask and answer questions. She divided the class in small groups to work together. This allowed the students to help each other and to practice their speaking skills. By pairing students, Ms. Griego was able to help the students meet the

Hilbun uses figurative language in his poem “Hope” to communicate how important not giving up even in the worst situations, and how even the littlest things can thrive after the worst of disasters happen. Think-pair-share allows all students to have a chance to think and speak about the topic. It allows allows the teacher to monitor student understanding of the content and language objectives during a lesson. That being said, for this lesson I think the teacher did a good job at ultzing this stratgey, because as I noticed she paired up students prehaphs her ELL students with a non ELL student. Therefore, she allowed the ELL students to learn from non ELL students and to think and talk out their reasoning to another student. Rather than just listening to other students answer the question and their own reason.…

On Monday, during the third period, I observed a read-aloud lesson. After the teacher wrote the title of the book, she called the students over to the meeting area. Prior to the read aloud, the teacher set strict expectations for the students. For instance, the teacher advised the students that they had to remain seated “Criss-Crossed Applesauce” and raised their hands if they had a question or a comment about the reading. Otherwise, they had to sit calm and quiet.…

“The Knight” by Adrienne Rich establishes the conflict between how we, as a society, view people externally versus how people view themselves internally. By using figurative language, including extended metaphor, imagery, and anaphora, Rich imposes the idea of how we shouldn’t expect people to be exactly how we see them. The entire poem is nothing more than an extended metaphor. An extended metaphor is a metaphor that is developed over the course of a body of text. In “The Knight” the speaker compares the knight to people who go through life trying to be brave when they are actually dead on the inside.…

When designing the questions in the lesson plans, I predicted the possible answers and connect them to the discussion that follows.
