In The Devil’s Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea, the author retells a story of a group of immigrants who attempted to cross the border from Mexico into America. Throughout the novel, Urrea uses figurative language and syntax to prove the meaning that in order to grow as a community, there needs to be unity; making quick judgements about others can prevent people from uniting together. Towards the beginning of the novel, Urrea describes how the bodies of those who died crossing the border are treated in inspections for reports. He particularly describes how the deceased are referred to and states, “Some reports wittily call these men Juan Does. Jane Doe becomes Juana Doe” (Urrea 36).…

Erik Larson uses figurative language to project how Monroe felt the night before he agreed to work on Chicago’s world fair. His metaphor comparing “a choirboy among cardinals” to his gut feeling shows how uneasy Monroe was about this decision; perhaps even hinting what would come to be in the future. It helps the reader better comprehend that this wasn’t exactly an easy decision, and it spread the feeling apprehensiveness the author was trying to exude from Monroe to the reader- because even with a choirboy among cardinals matching pitch, one listening would know there is something wrong. Monroe knew the idea of working on the fair sounded seamless, but in his mind, he knew something wasn’t quite…

(pg 186) this changes Martins purpose and perspective dramatically for the rest of the journey he continues walking contemplating what he now knows about the land that he once thought Ted ownedand that he would soon become the owner , As martin continues on this journey of great understanding , he realises how selfish he once was and now all he wants is to care for the land. ‘Walking the boundaries’ is an amazing novel showing the readers not to assume things until you are 100% sure. Martins thoughts towards the boundaries and the farms property is a perfect example he soon realises how selfish he was (only wanting the property for the money) but wouldn't take it back because he wouldn't never discovered what the boundaries of the farm are really like and he wouldn't have met meg and wallumandulla along the way Martin learnt some amazing life lessons and gained a respect for Ted and learn a lot of history about his…

Hampton Sides' use of figurative language in the book The Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette establishes how obsessed Dr. August Petermann is with having another success in his recently lackluster career. Petermann, a successful geologist, ran the Anstalt at the Justus Perthes publishing company, which has “long been regarded as Germany’s preeminent publishing centers” (Sides 155). Regardless of his previous success, Petermann lacks the capability to once again bring acclaim to his center because “it was as though he were in mourning” (Sides 169). Sides compares the doctors situation to deep sadness, which is ironic because Petermann truly is depressed due to his daughters death. Petermann’s “mood had grown…

In Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, there appears to be an abundance of imagery. Imagery is a very important element in a novel because it sets the story up for the reader and aides their understanding of the storyline of the novel. Hosseini is very good at setting up the scene for the reader and, at the same time, incorporating figurative language.…

What is the main purpose of the figurative language in this poem? The main purpose of figurative language in “The Rider” by Naomi Shihab Nye is to convey how it’s possible to evade loneliness through rapid movements if the readers imagine the loneliness as an actual person. Through personification, the poet is able to depict loneliness as a competitor in roller-skating competition, where a person is attempting to outrun their loneliness. Beginning the poem, the poet starts with how a boy, who is implied to be a roller-skater, interacts with her, claiming “if he roller-skated fast enough/his loneliness couldn’t catch up with him” (2-3).…

1.In most case scenarios, the first sentence is usually the topic sentence or the hook statement; although in this case the author used his first sentence as an imagery for the setting of the story. “It was a hot afternoon, and the railway carriage was correspondingly sultry. . . nearly an hour ahead” this comment gave information like the location the story takes place, the time it takes place, and the weather condition. Even though the author gave background to the story, he also helped the readers and/or audience visualize the setting. As the reader closes their eyes, they will be able to picture standing in the middle of a railway carriage, nearly breaking into a major sweat, while looking to the left and seeing the sun rays beaming down.…

I have chosen Question One: Emile Bronte’s Wuthering Heights discuss how an attention to figurative language can help in an analysis of literary texts as I enjoyed reading the text and the many qualities that made it such an enjoyable read. When we read something we usually take it as it is but that is exactly what figurative language is not. When we read certain expressions or words with a different meaning it is known as figurative language which is different from literal interpretation. Figurative language goes beyond the meanings of the words that we read which give us, the readers a greater insight into the piece. There are many types of figurative language such as symbolism, metaphors and similes which are all seen in Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering…

It’s like the green fields are affected by leprosy. The poet is angry for such heinous attitude of the British towards the slaves of the seventeenth century. And he bids farewell to the good old days with the introduction of the British Imperialism. But this system didn’t last long when the poet mentions, “Deciduous beauty prospered and is gone, But where the lawn breaks in a rash of trees.” As the British Empire got involved in immoral colonial slavery, the system lacked proper authority to ensure effective administration which resulted in its decay and loss.…
