Figurative Language In Titus Andronicus

Titus Andronicus is full of characters that are complex and confusing. These two passages however help decipher the two ways characters present themselves: as victims who cannot make sense of their situations or characters who present themselves as victims who have made sense of their situations. This is important because it shows how the characters control the tone of the play. Titus’ speech in act three creates a gloomy, tragic tone, which is part of a tragic play’s characteristics: the hero experiencing anagnorisis. Marcus’ speech in act five however brings the tone back to the same aggressive, violent tone at the beginning of the play and strays from the typical structure of a tragedy. Therefore, these two passages show that Titus Andronicus should not be read as a tragedy but rather as a comedy or a dramatic commentary on violence and revenge, which is reflected through the tones of the passages. …show more content…
He uses very vivid imagery of water and natural elements throughout and that emphasizes his words when read aloud. It is all written in blank verse, which adds onto the effect of his words flowing out uncontrollably like the water he speaks of. Some sentences are however ending with punctuation and this creates the effect when reading of breaks and pauses as a person does when speaking emotionally or while crying. All of the speech is in iambic foot and all the lines except “when heaven doth weep, doth not the earth o’erflow?” (3.1.220) and, “then must my earth be movèd with her sighs” (3.1.226) are in pentameter. Having these two be the exceptions is significant because in these two lines Titus speaks of the overflow of water, which is shown in the overflow of meter. Julia Taymor’s Titus is a 1999 film adaptation of Shakespeare’s earliest work, Titus Andronicus. The largest change is in broadening the role of Young Lucius. In the original manuscript, he was likely referred to only as "The Boy". He is the first and last character we see, a sign of significance in Shakespeare's work. Visuals and the Violated: Women in Julie Taymor’s Titus Up until the past few decades, Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus was never taken seriously by critics or audiences. As a revenge tragedy set in ancient Rome, the story is one of never-ending, over the top violence, which viewers may find hard to sit through without rolling their eyes, or at least becoming entirely desensitized. When Julie Taymor created the film version of this text, Titus, in 1999, she attempted to utilize visual violence in a way that an audience can make sense of. Just as Shakespeare used allusions to literature to more convincingly build the world of his Roman Titus Andronicus, Taymor weaves Titus together as a pastiche of references to history and pop culture,…

The Tempest, written by William Shakespeare in 1610, portrays the social issues and insecurities that were caused due to the new-found colonialism. In the second scene of Act 2, the relationship between the colonizers and the colonized festers, consequently leading to discord. Shakespeare uses variations of literary devices, figurative language, diction, and combating tones to portray this societal conflict through the inequality that encompasses the partisan power struggles between the Europeans and natives on the island. Repetition and meter were singular literary devices used to create a discrepancy between Caliban…

Aristotelian vs. Modern Perception of the Protagonist Affinity toward a character is often skewed by one’s own personalities and beliefs, such as the view of characterization within Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. In order to properly assess the protagonist within this play, first the thoughts of Aristotelian theory of tragic heroes will be overviewed, and their involvement in plot development. Next, this theory, and a specific main character approach by Aristotle, will then be applied to The Agamemnon, determining who the tragic hero is according to Aristotle. Finally, the modern interpretation of the protagonist of The Agamemnon will be inspected, comparing its clashing components to Aristotle’s original Poetics definition of the tragic hero, and a possible different character as the protagonist. A modern audience is often more open to interpretation, where alternatives are more apt to be…
