Figurative Language In Romeo And Juliet

Great Essays
Throughout the course of the year, we have practiced writing universal, debatable theme statements in the form of research assignments, paragraphs, and class discussions.

Example 1:
(Romeo and Juliet)
The central message of the play is that hatred leads to tragedies. If there is detestation between at least one person in at least two different groups, all members of either group are prohibited from associating themselves with people from the other. However, two people from opposite sides may like each other, like Romeo and Juliet, and must find ways to interact secretly. If this secret is discovered, one of its participants will be in danger and seriously punished. This causes great sadness to emerge from both, and may result in them harming themselves,

It is also debatable and specifically says what being human truly means.

Target: Descriptive Language- Identify precise words and phrases, sensory, and figurative language.

While reading Romeo & Juliet through Actively Learn, we were required to answer questions that often included identifying literary devices and parts of speech. Additionally, there were multiple occasions in tests and quizzes where we were being tested on our proficiency in descriptive language.

Example 1:
Shakespeare uses personification, comparing an inanimate object to an action when he writes, "Death, that hath suck'd the honey of thy breath". He uses imagery while describing how Juliet, "Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks". An oxymoron is displaying when Romeo states he will bury Paris in a "triumphant grave".

This example, while seems simple, is important because it shows my ability to discover and give specific examples of specific literary devices. This was graded proficient because the examples were accurate and applied to each device, in this personification, imagery, and

In the 16th century tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses metaphor and diction, aimed at Tybalt and the 2 families, to reveal Mercutio’s own negative tone/attitude behind his outlook on those whom he had blamed for his death. For example, after Mercutio had been fatally struck from a sword blow by Tybalt in swords dual, Mercutio realizes he is going to die from being stabbed by Tybalt, and says “ I am peppered, I warrant, for this world. A plague o' both your houses! Zounds, a dog, a rat, a mouse, a cat to scratch a man to death! A braggart, a rogue, a villain that fights by the book of arithmetic!”…

The Assessment tool: In order to understand where my students stand with their knowledge of literary elements and techniques I choose to give them a pre- assessment with a Kahoot quiz. The students would answer questions about the parts of literary elements and different types of literary techniques. In this case each question was given 10 seconds to read the question (I would read the question and answer choices out loud) and 45 seconds to answer the question. This helped me figure out how to further discuss the future lessons around the 5 literary elements; the students will focus more on plot, point of view, theme, onomatopoeia, alliteration, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and personification.…

Scene G was chosen because it was thought to be an easier and less-people model. This scene is after Juliet proposes to Romeo, Juliet sends the Nurse out to get Romeo’s reply. After receiving the answer, when the Nurse gets back, she sees a way of teasing Juliet and not letting Juliet know the news. Using hyperbole, the Nurse exaggerates how tired she is, until Juliet is full of rage. By comparing or using imagery to the text, the setting is placed in the Capulet’s orchard, putting the characters where they were possibly in, compared to the text.…

In the movie, the actors of Romeo and Juliet talk about Shakespeare's felt and thought while making this play. Queen Elizabeth was the main person they were allowed to act. Woman dressed as man, and man dressed as woman in theatre. They didn't think it was allowed but since Queen Elizabeth I loved theatre so much it was considered okay. On the article it doesn't really say about theatre how it did in the movie.…

Language is a key factor in the analysis of Shakespeare plays. No word or image is there by accident. Characters are defined by how they speak, the words they use. Shakespeare uses many types of figurative language in Acts I of Romeo and Juliet. Figures of speech are poetic devices in which words are used in a non-literal or imaginative sense to make writing more descriptive and colourful.…

In the stories Romeo And Juliet and Flowers For Algernon, one thing I struggled to do was find a common theme. It took me almost an hour, but after close examination I realized one huge common theme I seemed to be blatantly ignoring. That theme was that relationships with others, both with humans and animals, are bound to end. There is many different ways the authors showed these themes in their story, but the ways I will be focusing on is through foreshadowing in the storyline, stereotyping and generalization from both the authors and characters, and the conflict that the characters in the story face throughout their lives.…

Through the use of conceptual metaphors and image schemas Shakespeare exploits the intricacies of meaning in his plays. In view of the cognitive theory, metaphor and image schemas are not just a figurative language of thought but rooted in our everyday world of experience. There are two conceptual domains linked in a metaphorical mapping known as source domain and the target domain. The source domain is concrete and can be experienced or perceived ‘directly’ whereas the target domain is more abstract or concerns ‘subjective’ experience. Image-schemas are defined as the pervasive organizing structures in cognition which emerge from our bodily and social interaction with the environment.…

    1. After going through the play, my initial expression was that it was full of conflicts. There are a lot of quarrels between the lovers. Hermia and Lysander even ran off to the woods with the hope of starting a future life together. Here there is a presentation of a great personal versus society conflict that would see Hermia executed if she didn’t marry Demetrius as her father wanted.…

In Romeo's monologue he uses a substantial amount of figurative language, he first starts off with a very romantic metaphor. He compares his star-crossed-lover, Juliet, to the sun, she is (supposedly) all he needs in his life. In the following line he slyly uses personification and claims the moon is full of envy. Because Juliet is so bright and beautiful, she puts the moon to shame because it is ailing and pale. Romeo concludes his shower of compliments by using a hyperbole, Juliet's rosy cheeks are capable of outshining the stars out in space (like how the sun outshines a lamp).…

Throughout his plays, Shakespeare uses figurative language to depict a greater message than what is simply read. Love is a reoccurring theme throughout Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream and although this play deals with romance, it is not a typical love story like others we are familiar with. Love is believed to be a passionate experience that brings happiness into the lives of those involved; however, Shakespeare writes a satire on this thought in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He uses a metaphor that “Love said to be a child” (1.1.238) while he writes his play. This metaphor is portrayed through characters that become a child once they fall in love.…

A change in opinion and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet When people change their minds there are a variety of viable outcomes. Some outcomes may have been anticipated and that’s why they changed their mind, but most likely it will be something completely uncontemplated and random. People don’t always think of every feasible outcome, that’s why the unpondered frequently occurs. For instance, in The Tragedy Of Romeo And Juliet, characters including Capulet and Romeo exemplify this situation as stated above.…
