“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.” ― Mahatma Gandhi A not only intense but dramatic storyline that is created through jealousy, envy, and greed is featured in Shakespeare's play, “Othello”, but a story that communicates how evil influences have the ability to tempt the once innocent to the point of madness. Within Shakespeare’s Othello, Shakespeare uses a variety of figurative language and diction to influence the audience to react more sympathetically towards the main character Othello. He also uses this to demonstrate how Othello as a character, advances throughout entirety of the play. This is only because of Iago’s evil influences that influence him to believe that his wife betrayed him, and because he believes this evil claim he willingly lets the evil forces take over and get the best of him. Shakespeare uses personification in,“By heaven, I saw my handkerchief in ’s hand. O perjured woman, thou dost stone my heart, And mak’st me call what I intend to do A murder, which I thought a sacrifice! I saw the handkerchief.” (5.2 70-74) Not only does Othello call his wife a liar but, he also blames her for his evilness. Because Othello plans to kill Desdemona over a handkerchief and the idea of her cheating on him that she is denying shows that Othello was never really a strong leader he was just portraying himself as one. Good morning fellow aspiring directors, I’m here today from the Australian Film School and will be discussing the well known play Othello by Shakespeare, the play to this day is still very relevant, Shakespeare has done this by incorporating the themes jealousy, appearance and reality and racism which still occurs in our society today and can often appear in our day to day life. By including these themes in the play it keeps the relationship with the now modern audience despite the original plays age. This is seen in Geoffrey Sax’s 2001 film Othello, where Geoffrey has appropriated the film following the original plot but has changed many aspects of Shakespeare’s Othello to suit todays audience, while keeping the themes showing the same universal…

In Othello, Shakespeare does not give any serious motivation for Iago to influence Othello in such a negative way. Iago goes above and beyond to destroy Othello. He constantly feeds him lies and sets up multiple situations that present a false reality. For example, in act three scene three, Iago has his wife, Emilia, steal the handkerchief that Othello gave to Desdemona and later gives it to Cassio. Othello seeing Cassio with the handkerchief confirms in his mind the lie that Desdemona is being unfaithful to him with Cassio.…

A telltale sign of a good story is when one can identify and relate with the characters. Shakespeare is known as one of the absolute best at creating flawed characters that are still worth caring for. It’s difficult to connect with real people and fictional characters alike when they present themselves as flawless, because human beings aren’t perfect and they relate and bond over these imperfections. One of Shakespeare’s greatest yet most troubled characters is Othello; a courageous man, blind to his own detriments, who that has worked for everything he has despite imposing circumstances. Othello is an extremely complex individual whose personality traits coincide remarkably well with those of world-renowned rapper and fashion designer Kanye…

He fears the exposure of his true character and will do all he possibly can to keep people thinking of him as an honest man. At first, Iago threatens Emilia not to say another word about the handkerchief that he uses as part of the plan to destroy Othello. He tells Emilia to “Be wise and get you home.” (Act V.ii.221), Emilia rejects his declaration and shortly after, Iago draws his sword. It is clear to see that Iago is the villain of Shakespeare’s play “Othello.” He is a disloyal friend to Roderigo, he treats his wife as is she is a serve to him, and lied to his army leader to the extent that Othello went and killed his own wife. Without Iago’s villainy in this play, the reader can look at it as if there would be no plot at all. The whole story that he made up about Cassio and Desdemona’s affair, there would be revenge to Othello because he gave the job to a less deserving Michael Cassio, and Roderigo would be way better off without his “friend” telling him to give all of his money to his “friend” would have never happened without the true villainy of the antagonist of “Othello,”…

Alongside Othello’s gradual buildup of jealousy throughout the play by Iago’s masterful plans, the downfall of Othello ultimately demonstrates the…
