Figurative Language In 'Of Mice And Men'

hapters one and two of “Mice and Men” were very eventful. The author John Steinbeck used vivid figurative language at the beginning of each chapter to describe the scenery. This helps the reader get an image of what the setting is. Another thing this helps aid is the mood. It allows the reader to create a tone as to how to read the words off the page. Anywho, in chapter one we meet the two main characters George and Lennie. George and Lennie had just run away from a small town called “Weed”. George and Lennie had to run out of Weed after Lennie pulled a girls dress. Lennie seems to have some kind of mental disorder. I also infer that touching soft things helps calm his nerves. He wanted to touch the girls dress because it seemed soft. When …show more content…

This summer I read John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. John Steinbeck uses a variety of figurative language and imagery in his writing. I found ten quotes that refers to the symbols animals, water, buildings, dreams, and characters, two each. Then I analyzed each quote for how it connects to the symbol, after that I looked for the quote’s imagery and figurative language. “I could pet it with my thumb while we walked along,” page 6.…

Although Of Mice and Men may contain harsh dictions, this language is realistic for the time period and leads to a better understanding of the Great Depression. John Steinbeck uses many inappropriate words in dialogues, but they accurately portray the society at that time. For instance, as Carlson enters the room, he asks Curley “how’s your bitch” (35). By showing the misogynistic view men had of women at the time period, it reveals to readers the mindset people had at the time. It also exposes the students to the society and expands their horizons to understand and appreciate society’s continually evolving culture.…

Of Mice and Men essay I think that George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men have a better relationship than Romeo and Juliet because George protected Lennie on multiple occasions, George was able to find him and Lennie a job when it was hard to find open jobs, and George only killed Lennie because it was the most humane choice he had. My first reason is because George was able to find both of them a job, even though it was very hard to find a job and Lennie was mentally disabled. This is shown when George successfully gets them a job at the ranch even after being chased out of Weed after Lennie grabbed the girl's dress. That would have made finding a job difficult, however George was still able to get them a job even though he had to lie a bit. On pages 21 and 22, we see this when the boss asks about Lennie not being much of a talker.…

George and Lennie’s Relationship George and Lennie shared a fairly strong friendship, but the relationship that they had was not one that friends should have. Because of Lennie’s disability, George could not always treat him as a friend, but sometimes more as a child. The first moment in the book that we can start to see that George feels responsible for Lennie was after they had run away from Weed, and were hiding in the woods. This was when George was starting to get very angry and scream at Lennie, he said “An’ what I got, I got you!” (11) This quote shows that George feels as if his life could be so much better and easier without Lennie, but he has to keep Lennie with him, because he feels responsible for him.…
