Figurative Language In Look At What You Made Me Do

I feel the “Danish Poet” doesn’t appeal to me. The narrative film is bland and it is easy to predict what will happen next. There is no excitement or thrill even though it is classified as a comedy and a romantic short film. However, I found the “Morning Song” to be much more exciting and enticing. The use of figurative language throughout the poem, encouraged me to dig deeper and find out the connotative meaning of words unlike, with the “Danish Poet” where everything was much more straight forward and barely any figurative language was used to convey a message. Figurative language was also used in Taylor Swift’s song called, “Look at What You Made Me Do” and I would agree that it is much like the “Morning Song” where you would have to take

Compare the ways in which Plath and Duffy use a range of imagery to express their ideas in Ariel and Mean Time Both poets, Duffy and Plath explore different ideas through the use of imagery. Duffy in poems such as Havisham and Valentine explores contrasting ideas of love, using imagery to show both the lasting effect of heartbreak in Havisham, and the realistic feelings of love and commitment in Valentine. Plath however uses imagery to express the peacefulness and euphoric state found in having a lack of responsibility in Tulips, and in You’re uses imagery to communicate the unconditional love she feels towards her unborn child. Both Duffy and Plath use imagery very differently in Duffy’s Havisham the imagery is used to aid the creation of a distinct persona, whereas Plath uses imagery based on her own personal experience in both Tulips and You’re. In Havisham, the persona of the spinster character Miss Havisham…

The poem I chose, “Happiness” by Jane Kenyon, describes what happiness truly is. It tells a story of who it comes to, and how happiness comes to everyone no matter what the situation is. The poem says in the beginning 2 paragraphs how happiness is always there and that it “saved its most extreme form for you alone”. I believe what the Kenyon is trying to say at that moment is that you have the power to be happy, even when you are alone. The poem also has very specific examples of who happiness comes to.…

Literature Paper Poetry can be very complex and even though it can vary and use different techniques to get the point across it may come to the same conclusion and meaning, and can also be interpreted differently. Poetry is meant to be understood in the reader's own way. Why I Hate Raisins, Hand-Me-Down Halloween, and My Brother at 3AM are about the struggles of living in the reservation, but use different style, syntax and tone. Why I Hate Raisins is a poem about the struggles of not having enough food or not being able to afford food other than what they received. It is written in subtly and sounds simple, so the true meaning behind the poem is not really understood until the end, and has a deeper meaning.…

When it comes to the fine art of poetry, there is a fine line differing between good and bad. But how do you decipher when poetry is good? In my opinion, you can differ a piece of flawless literature from mediocre based purely upon the feeling it invokes. A piece of amazing literature can cause the reader to experience emotions that they would likely feel if they were genuinely in that situation, putting them in the shoes of the speaker within the piece of literature. In my opinion, an example of this is the poem “Troll” written by Shane Koyczan.…

''Poetry'' by Marianne Moore was very interesting. For you to understand this poem you have to break it down paragraph by paragraph to truly understand the meaning that's in this. This Poem at first was confusing I had to read it a second time to understand what's going on. The way this poem was set, it was hard to find out the meaning. I think out of all the other poems I think this one was the hardest to crack down, but the best thing out of this poem was when I finally understood it, I was able to see where Moore was going with it.…

Having a unique voice is the byproduct of a creative mind. This, in and of itself, is a feat that many poets, authors and artists struggle to find on a daily basis, however, there are a select few who have imprinted their voice in history and have created works that were far ahead of their respective times. One such example is a poet by the name of Walt Whitman, whose voice travels and echoes in the American mind as casually as a song plays on the radio. Whitman’s style and inherent ability to capture a moment in words, as if the reader were watching a film or staring at a photograph, is uncanny, and his innate ability to create a scenario in which the reader feels both comfortable and familiar is eerily perfect. By using a humanist perspective,…

Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were two highly influential poets from America during the 1800’s; critics as being radical as it rejected the traditional conventions of death in a dominantly Puritan state describe their poetry. Both poets were fascinated by the theme death throughout their poetry, although their depictions of death were different, both poets shared the similar concept that death leads to immortality and therefore should be embraced. However, despite sharing similarities in their overall message, both Whitman and Dickinson possessed unique writing styles different from the other. This can be seen in Whitman’s epic A Song of Myself, which employs the use of free verse; a form not constricted by regular rhyme or meter. Dickinson’s…

For this alternative assignment, I listened to an assortment of poetry by Warsan Shire. I chose her for this assignment because of her subject matter and style. For most of her poetry, Shire speaks about love and what it means to be a woman in today’s world; in addition to, social problems such as the topic of refugees. As a fellow writer, I feel inspired by what she is accomplishing in the literary world. She uses her voice as an African American to give her poetry a specific flavor that speaks of the black experience.…

There are always going be battles in people's way that they have to overcome. The whole song shows imagery because it is telling people that giving up is never the answer they should always try even though it might knock them down. “The struggles I'm facing, the chances I'm taking, sometimes might knock me down but, no I'm not breaking” (Miley Cyrus) this shows to never give up.…
