Ashley is cheerful and radiates positive energy. She has a natural ability to work well with others. Her peers seek her out regularly to be part of their collaborative group. Ashley is insightful during class discussion and want her to increase participation because her ideas can help push the thinking of others. Additionally, we want to continue to encourage Ashley to take on more challenging tasks with independence.
In reading, Ashley’s interest in reading is increasing. Clearly, she desires books that have a realistic plotline and discuss heavy-hearted issues. She is able to notice the how an author uses craft to enhance her own writing. I will never forget the moment when after we finished reading, “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen; Ashley said, “Wow, that book was just so beautiful. The words were poetic.” From that moment on, Ashley has incorporatated Jane Yolen’s use of figurative language in each of her writing pieces. Ashley has become an important mentor for others during writing workshop as she independently leads students led revision conferences. While Ashley activity uses her writing toolkit for support, she should reference the checklists and mentor pieces with a close eye before moving on. She enjoys reading all types of books from adventure books, nonfiction books about historical disasters, cookbooks, and books with strong girl characters. Louise's reading notebook reflects the consistent effort she applies to improving her reading skills each day. Louise can decode the majority of text at her current reading level, however when she approaches an unfamiliar word, she requires assistance in order to apply decoding strategies effectively.
