Film Studies: 1800, Prager Section B In the movie Fight Club (1999), directed by David Fincher, Edward Norton and Brad Pitt put on amazing roles in a movie about disrupting the norm of higher society. Edward Norton who from here on will be referred to as the ‘Narrator’, is a white collar employee who has not slept in months due to his severe insomnia. Brad Pitt plays the role of Tyler Durden who is a private salesman and manufacturer of soap. After meeting on a plane during a routine business trip, Tyler and the Narrator decide to organize an underground fighting ring called ‘Fight Club’. The Narrator represents the good, predictable side while Tyler Durden represents the unpredictable, bad guy that brings mayhem to the city. Director David Fincher uses direct address from the Narrator during the soap making process to explain that Tyler Durden is a sadistic soap producer and seller (Text, Page 81). He hates high society and wants to rid the word of its ‘evil’. In the opening scene when the Narrator and Tyler are in the same room, quickly the camera pans around the room, through the building to the basement and on to the other buildings. This action is exposing all the explosives set in place throughout the financial district. Tyler’s plan is to destroy the financial district and cause a financial meltdown that will put an end to the high society that he absolutely hates. As simple as it should seem, Tyler seems to have easy access to explosives but for the viewer it doesn’t make sense as to why he sells soap. The main ingredient in dynamite is nitro glycerin which just happens to be extracted from soap. Soap is a byproduct of the chemical breakdown of fat. Tyler uses fat that he steals from the liposuction morgue and produces soap. During the process of producing soap, the product nitro glycerin is produced which he extracts to make his
