Our Language “For others, it is to share and spread also those words that are meaningful to us. But primarily for us all, it is necessary to teach by living and speaking those truths which we believe and know beyond understanding,” from “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action” by Audre Lorde. Within our society women are viewed with a lower status than men just because of their use of indirect speech. This is mainly due to how children are brought up within their cultures and ultimately society. However in other cultures, indirectness is used by both genders and it does not reflects one’s status.…

My buddy and I where captivated by the sound and watching the clay pigeons break that we wanted to shoot at the clay pigeons too. I don’t remember the make and model of the shotgun…

Being a social worker in the mental health and intellectually disabled arena, I frequent short term and long term psychiatric facilities. There are many things about a psychiatric facility, a specific smell, an eerie feeling that makes the hair stand on the back of your neck, and an overall sense of despair. Sure, people go to get better and many times they do, but the important thing to know is people don't enjoy being there. A facility like this, is not a joyous occasion. This is significant to the central character in the novel I am reading, One flew over the cuckoo's nest by Ken Kesey.…

Representations of masculinity in Fight Club and The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner dissertation proposal. The main focus of my dissertation will be on representations of masculinity in Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club and James Hogg’s The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. The aim of the project is to be able to compare and contrast the representations of masculinity in both texts and to be able to determine whether they are inaccurate or whether they serve as a precise social commentary with universal applicability or whether they are only relevant to their time periods and regions. Fight Club and The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner will supplement my argument as they offer a variety of themes between them, such as religion, fanaticism, violence, single parenthood and isolation.…

Barefoot, wet, and cold, author Zadie Smith, as recounted in her essay Man vs. Corpse, finds an old collection of Italian paintings bound in a weathered hardcover. Grappling with the ever-familiar urge to explore lives unfamiliar—via social media—on her phone, she forces herself to thumb through the contents. She asserts that her “mind does not easily accept stately historical processions. But Golden Yellows and eggshell blues [...] are the sorts of things [her] mind accepts.” (2) Flipping through the pictures she is enthralled by the colors and lines so brilliantly and thoughtfully finessed upon the page.…

The objective of Fight Club is to survive using only what you need, your body, in the fight. The ability to endure the pain throughout the fight is a test to their character and therefore the men are able to find their identity. Material items and money are completely disregarded and not a factor in the fight, specifically defying the essence of the male American dream’s definition of masculinity. This is because according to Tyler Durden, “You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank.…
