Fieldwork Excursion #2
Activity #1: Impression Management in Action
Step #1: For activity one of the fieldwork excursion we were to choose two different situations that we encounter in our everyday life and observe ourselves throughout these situations. The two situations I chose to observe myself at, was my volleyball practice and in my organic chemistry class. I chose these two specifically because I know my observations of my self would be vastly different in these scenarios.

At volleyball practice my facial expression is probably focused and attentive. In class my facial expression would be similar because in both situation I am trying to lean and get better. Some things I would typically say at volleyball practice would be words of encouragement to teammates or letting people know who is taking the ball. In class some typical things I would say would be just asking clarifying questions. If I were to wear to class what I wear to volleyball practice I would be stared at for dressing inappropriately. And vice versa if I were to wear jeans or a lab coat to practice I would be laughed at. In both situations I would classify myself as Mikaela the student athlete. Although I am the same person in both situations I do present myself slightly different, because I want to belong. If I didn’t act a certain way at practice or in class I wouldn’t feel like I was meant to be …show more content…
I also noticed the customers had some similar patterns, most people would say thank you once receiving there food. Another pattern I noticed was that most customers would ask a question regarding one of the menu items. A few norms the employees faced at work would be taking orders, making sandwiches, making sure the customers our happy, and cleaning up after others. I would assume those would be the everyday norms of a Panera employee. A few norms the customer would have to be having someone take their order and receiving what they wanted in a timely matter. I think that is the norm that every customer expects when they go into a fast food

Detaching myself from the world around me to look in as a third party exposed the culture I have been raised into. My expectations before participating in this activity was for it to not be as authentic as it was. I did not realize that there was a place downtown that had such real and good food and wondered why I haven’t heard of this place before. Also, I was surprised with the poverty I saw around the area. I have always grown up in areas that have a decent amount of money and have never been to a spanish speaking country or area before. This experience really opened my eyes to the fact that there are places out there that still have authenticity and still try to resist becoming “Americanized” in society.…
