James Comer once said, “No significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.” This was the situation of a teacher, Mr.Wayman and his class in the poem, “Students,” composed by Tom Wayman, and of an assistant professor, Katie and her students in an excerpt from the novel, “Crow Lake,” penned by Mary Lawson. Despite the remarking resemblance in the relationship shared by the instructors’ and their respective students there are numerous differences between the two pieces of literature because of the manner in which the teachers react when their teaching skills are challenged. In Students and in Crow Lake, both of the instructors’ fail to fathom their students; and the students’ fail to fathom their respective instructors’.…

In the article, “A New Deal for Teachers,“ by Mathew Miller, he argues that low income families with students from fourth grade through eighth grade show significantly lower tests scores compared to students from high income areas. This problem Miller addresses, is that there are not enough good teachers in poor cities, and not enough teachers willing to continue their jobs as teachers. Another argument Miller indicates is that having a good quality teacher makes a huge difference in the child’s education and overall development. Miller says that teachers, who do not care about their students and their performance, result in students doing poorly in class academics. One way to resolve these problems is to raise the wages for the teachers, but base salary upon performance and educational background.…

The first teacher of Melinda’s that we are introduced to is Mr. Neck. He is described to look like a retired jock. I imagine him with a height above 6 feet, someone who towers over anyone within 5 feet of him. He has a buzz cut so you could say that he looks like someone that had come out of the military. From the way he is described, I would think that he would be a very loud individual.…

His sheer enthusiasm for his students to succeed is beyond the ordinary teacher, as he encourages his students to always go an extra mile. Mr. Huff never fails to hint slight humor in class, which makes the learning experience entertaining, yet worthwhile. Fieldwork allows anthropologists to collect information and experience a part of a society directly. It helps anthropologists understand and see things that provide the most accurate and real information. Although fieldwork can provide firsthand information and good explanations, it might not be representative of an entire society and hold up over time. Margaret Mead’s fieldwork in Samoa led to findings of sexual freedom of adolescents during the 1920’s, when Derek Freeman conducted research in another part of Samoa in the 1960’s, he found that adolescents were sexually restrictive. Freeman wrote in his findings that Mead got most things wrong.…

Fieldwork is an important aspect of the sociocultural side of anthropology. It involves participating in and observing other culture’s as well as avoiding ethnocentricity and remaining neutral (Denham, 2014). I observed Mosman library on three occasions, one at 9:30 am on the 10th of October, another at 3:30 pm on the 12th of October and 5:30 pm on the 14th of October. When observing, I chose to sit in different library locations each time, once in the quiet study area on an individual desk, another on a group desk with other people and the third in the magazine/newspaper area of the library. I could do the same stretching back to pre-k, but there is one important characteristic three educators in my high school shared. What made these three individuals unique was their ability to inspire me. My chemistry and art teachers, Dr. Beulah Durr and Ms. Nikki Kendrot, showed me that these two subjects were not mutually exclusive. Both teachers offered me opportunities to explore art and science, which grew into life long passions. My high school principal, Mr. Granger Ward, inspired me to be a better student by treating me with respect even when my actions may not have warranted his even handed approach.…

Autobiography Thinking back, there have been many different influences that have helped shaped and guide me towards the field of teaching. There have been five instructors that have helped me push towards a profession in Secondary History education. My sixth grade teacher, my high school history teacher, my high school principal, and two of my grandparents have introduced me and interested me in the field of education but more specifically in the discipline of history/social science. Along with individuals, school organizations, sports, and 4-H have also played a role in my education. Reflecting on my past teachers, in sixth grade I remember gaining my first interest when my teacher would bring history to life.…
