According to the Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards, Council on Social Work Education, Inc., competencies are “measurable practice behaviors that are comprised of knowledge, values, and skills. The goal of the outcome approach is to demonstrate the integration and application of the competencies in practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.” (2008, 2012) There are ten core competencies that in order to be proficient in practice each social worker must need to learn to apply and practice in the field. The first core competency states that a social worker will identify as a professional and conduct oneself accordingly. As a social worker one has to be able identifies gaps in service; identifies problems with service delivery such as violations of clients’ right of self-determination, informed consent or confidentiality, dehumanizing or discriminatory practices; utilizes appropriate techniques of advocacy and social action to remedy problems in access to social services. As part of my job at a CSA (Community Service Agency) is to advocate for parents who most of the time do not know their rights or have no knowledge of the different resources available in the communities for them. It is my job to make them aware that this resource exits and to introduce them to the clients so they can make an educated decision on which services are the best matches for their …show more content…
As part of the Field Work (SWK 401E) class, each student is responsible develop a learning plan and to demonstrate excitement and enthusiasm regarding learning, one of the reason why now I usually find myself reading articles about recidivism, new laws and anything that is related to law enforcement, substance abuse, and prisons. The student also is responsible for seek out new learning experiences to build practice skills; as well as to formulates both short and long term professional goals and steps required to achieve them. The students also have the responsibility to participate schedule and participate in supervision, formulates questions when uncertain. Create a relationship with supervisor and uses feedback to improve practice skills and increase self-awareness; identify and discuss issues and situations that create discomfort for the student as well as for the client. As part of my internship at the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Facility in Enfield, CT, I meet with my field supervisor Counselor Brown every Thursday at 10:30 am. At supervision we discuss the areas or topics that I have learned during the week, Counselor Brown gives me feedback in what areas I should make some improvements and we deliberate future goals.
