The Field Training Officer (FTO) program has brought the training of police officers a long way. This excellent program controls discrimination, and that it aids in a wider range of hiring issues. When an officer finishes the FTO program, he or she can honestly know that they have been through both thorough and stern training. Before the implementation of the Field Training Officer (FTO) program, new cadets were assigned to a high-ranking officer. This officer taught the rookie on-the-job training. As stated by Doerner (2012), “If the rookie did satisfactorily as far as the senior officer was concerned, he or she passed the acid test (p. 157). This student then became a sworn employee of the police department; however, his formality changed when Dr. Michael Roberts along with the San Jose Police Department implemented the FTO program. From the time a rookie starts the FTO training program until completion, he or she will have in-depth training in every aspect to launch the job as a police officer. The departments are more formal and structured. The cadets now consist of males, females, and black and white officers. In other words, discrimination is no longer an issue. The FTO program also gives the police department or training academy, an enhanced awareness of new cadets’ appropriateness as far as the occupation of a police officer. There is also better officer retention, and management issues show declines. FTO programs assist in providing the new personnel with continuous supervision by a trainer; therefore, when he or she goes out into the workforce alone, they will know what to do in real situations.
