Field Observation

Throughout this paper, I will be summarizing both my observation and interview with a personal trainer at Tysons Sport&Health. The reason I chose to interview a personal trainer is because becoming a personal trainer is the next step in my career path. This allowed me to get an inside look on how business runs and what kind of environment I will be working in. I gained a great insight into how much time and effort is put in outside of training clients in order to make sure business is running smoothly and there is a continuous stream of clients. The professional I observed is Devon Jones, he is a personal trainer and the Explosive Performance program director for Tysons Sport&Health. The Explosive Performance

The environment was unlike how I believe most people think it is. Many people think gyms are unfriendly with everyone keeping to themselves and not wanting to help anyone else. Some even see a gym to be downright hostile. But this is the complete opposite of how the atmosphere and environment here at Tysons Sport&Health felt. As soon as you walk in you can tell everyone was there to help you out. All the personal trainers were friendly and willing to give a hand to anyone that asked. The atmosphere was lively and energetic even though everyone was coming in to train after a long day of work. As for the attire since it was a gym it was more casual then other work places. The personal trainers were either wearing a branded t-shit or sports polo paired with athletic shorts or pants. Although they were dressed more casually, this did not give off a sense of unprofessionalism. My experience with Devon was both informational and fun. This is due to the fact that I have been working with for over a year now at Tysons Sport&Health. He has helped me a great deal with my certification for personal training and also with my training as a physique competitor. Throughout the observation, he would always make sure to answer any …show more content…
First, I asked him to break down what a typical workday schedule is like for him. When he comes in to work in the morning, he has a few minutes to check his emails and schedule to get a grasp on what he does for the day. His training sessions usually occur in 3 main time blocks. The first being those who come in before the sun is up in order to get their training in before work starting at 5 am. These people are usually those who work in the local corporate buildings and want to reserve time after work for their family. After the early morning crowd leaves, this is when he has most of his meetings and places most of his business calls. The second crowd usually starts filtering in around 11 am for a mid-day training session during their lunch break. Just like the first group, these are usually employees in the nearby buildings. During the time after second group, he will have more meetings, phone calls and answer emails. Now time for the after work rush, this is when most people will have their training as it is a convenient time to let traffic die down before heading back home. If he has any training sessions scheduled for athletes or sports teams, they will usually be done at this time or a bit later at around 7-9 pm. During a full day’s work, Devon would train anywhere between 10-20 clients depending on how busy the day is, how long each client is trained for, and whether or not he is training a team on that

I would like to recognize Jed Smith as an exceptional individual as well as collegiate strength and conditioning coach. His knowledge, personality, and altruistic character led the University of Northern Iowa to new heights. I was a student-athlete at the University of Northern Iowa majoring in Exercise Science when Jed became the head strength and conditioning coach. Jed started a tradition and foundation at UNI on an academic level as well as athletic. Academically, he worked closely with the exercise science department to put more of an emphasis on strength and conditioning as a profession, which further led to both of my degrees in Exercise Science (i.e., M.A. and B.A.).…

My professional philosophy for athletic training encompasses four main areas, which are the value of the profession, role of education, ethical behavior and relationship to others.
