When people think of police officers, they should think of someone with integrity, fairness and civility. When one is given power and authority over others, it is possible to assume that one will be ethical and just with their decisions. On the other hand is it possible that instead one might show their true colors? While much of society and the media blame strange behavior from police officers on race I believe that there’s another explanation.…
Minorities have the false reputation of being criminals and the police are abusing their power by targeting minorities in each and every way especially during traffic…
We are always told not to judge people by their looks, but we still do it and see what happened in this case. An incident man was killed just because he looked a certain way. Officers should treat minorities with respect because they too are humans who have families that love them. Just because they are a minority doesn’t mean that no one will care about them and can treated anyway. Cops shouldn’t let their ego get in the way of their job.…
African Americans have a long and difficult history in the United States. They were once property that could be bought and sold. They once had separate water fountains, bathrooms, and schools than whites. They had to fight for their rights in America and even though they have as many rights as every other American under the letter of the law, there are areas in which they still have to deal with undo ridicule, harassment, and injustices in our society.…
There has been a recently new idea streaming that describes how violent police encounters seem to be the same across all races. There seems to be no racial disparity across minorities in regards to being stopped by the police. There was a study conducted and published in the journal, Injury Prevention, which described that one of 291 police stops arrests ends up in someone getting injured or dying. Nonetheless, racial minorities, blacks and native Americans, with the ages ranging from 15-29, were more likely to be stopped, searched, and arrested by the police at higher rates than whites. (Oaklander)…
Warren (2008) stated there is an inequality between black and whites causing them to be treated differently when interacting with cops. Race is a predictor of how police interact with individuals, especially between blacks and whites. Not much is known about Hispanics or other minority groups and their interaction or perception of the police. It is popularly believed these other minorities have similar views towards law enforcement due to their similar economic and social statuses. In order to criticize race as a predictor it is important to look at other racial groups besides black and whites.…
The actions of some police officers in American do not line up with the policy that was passed in 2015. This policy was made to protect the rights of anybody at risk of racial profiling by law enforcement. Sadly, the news is riddled with stories of police officers shooting and killing citizens, and it so happens these civilians are usually minorities. The End Racial Profiling Act of 2015 states that it, "Prohibits any law enforcement agent or agency from engaging in racial profiling. " Racial profiling is a disease that has affected America; a stronger policy could help cure the sickness in this country.…
In the recent months police officers are getting a lot of heat towards their actions. I have heard/read so many people saying how police officers are all bad, that they are all power hungry and that they are all, yes, racist. Police…
White people are automatically protected and given the benefit of the doubt when confronted by the police by having white privilege. White privilege works in our world in many ways; it provides white people with many advantages and immunity to challenges people of color face. The protection of whiteness shapes the world we live in and is not easily deconstructed in any system. For example, a person of color, especially a black person, is not guaranteed the same treatment by cops that are given to white people. In Philando Castile’s case, he did everything the officer asked of him.…
In order to make the world a better place I would like to see less police brutality through stricter laws in government, a change in the way police are trained, and deeper investigation in issues of police brutality. Police brutality should be lessened because police are meant to be there to protect a community; however, the people being targeted by brutal police tactics, such as racial minorities, feel less safe due to the actions of the police and their abuse of power. This abuse includes taking advantage of someone, manipulation, an unfair gain of benefits for the police, assault, and physical or verbal maltreatment towards people. This should be handled because the only way to restore trust in our enforcement system is if we feel as though…
We all have stereotypes and prejudices that we believe about certain groups of people, but when we put those into use to judge another person is when discrimination happens. While we don’t want to admit that we have discriminatory tendency’s we all do. Even people we think are here to protect and help us take part in this racial profiling. Police men are recognized for catching bad guys, speeders, helping out our community, and for racial discrimination cases we hear about on the…
Why an Increase in Police Will Help Minority Communities The United States of America is a land ripe with unique opportunities, filled with a surprisingly diverse population, and one which values a strong sense of patriotism and a love for each and every fellow citizen. One of the utmost notable features which forms the basis for the U.S. being so beautiful is the people living here and their dedication to helping each other through hardships and overcoming racial, ethnic, and language barriers. Moreover, we as a society have made monumental steps in breaking down our barriers. However, at this current time, it seems that we still have much progress ahead of us in terms of improving the relations between minorities and police officers.…
Police discretion is defined as the decision-making power afforded to police officers that give them an opportunity of deciding if they want to pursue police procedure or just let someone off with a warning. For instance, the vast deal of discretion given to police officers while they are on patrol enforcing the law has changed (Brown, 2011). In fact, they have been provided with a certain amount of discretion they can use as people are different, and their cases are not the same, and also some situations are more severe than others. It sounds so wrong if police officers target people frequently than others as a result of race or other prejudices try to justify it with the discretion they have used.…
I conducted an in-person interview that took place in the home of the interviewee in Phoenix, Arizona. The interview was conducted on October 21st and lasted about 2 hours. I will be referring to my interviewee as “Dona” in order to protect her identity and keep her completely anonymous. For my interview I decided to take careful notes and directly transcribe the responses during the interview. As the interview began I noticed that “Dona” was responding with generic answers and gave minimal information.…
One could argue that there are not enough facts to determine the national character of all police officers, but i is undeniable that this is a problem for minorities (Ruth…
