By the day, a growing number of industries are tackling the issues of climate change and the sports industry is no exception. As you may know, Sports Authority Field Game Plan Green, the stadium’s s strategic path toward sustainability, outlines broad goals to promote green products and consider green energy options but little action has been taken to make these goals a reality. By setting measurable goals they will become more clear and achievable. The following recommendations can be implemented feasibly and have demonstrated success in other stadiums across the league:
Preserve energy through the overhaul of the stadium’s lighting systems by installing energy efficient lighting, increased system monitoring, and automated lighting fixtures.
Offset energy expenditures by installing solar panels that generate enough energy to cover a significant percentage of gameday energy usage.
Reduce Waste by establishing a visible recycle/ compost program
Decrease water usage by installing low flow plumbing fixtures throughout the stadium.
By taking action on Game Plan Green in a robust fashion by implementing these recommendations, the Denver Broncos will cut energy costs and promote the social responsibility of caring for the environment.

The solar panels mounted on the field’s parking lot signs have achieved this to some extent already; however, their small size does little to generate significant energy or get the attention of fans. The cost of installing larger and greater amounts of solar panels comes at a large cost but Sports Authority Field can take a similar funding approach to a number of other stadiums. That is partnering with solar energy companies to share the expense of installation in exchange for a portion of the generated energy and product
