From my own experiences, I am preparing myself to become the good teacher I described in the first question. My experiences that have given me the opportunity to become the good teacher I described before is through field experiences and making lesson plans. In a previous field experience of mine, I had a frustrating and challenging time. The structure of the classes for field experience and the teachers made the semester a bit stressful. However, I knew that I needed to keep pushing and learning as much as I could so that I could be confident in teaching certain subjects. I always strive to be successful and to do the best that I can, so I knew I needed to utilize resources and discuss with my classmates in order to improve on the assignments.

Performing ethnographic fieldwork can be challenging, especially when it comes to building rapport with your subjects. Often times the subjects of the research may feel intimidated, judged or like they won’t be understood when being interviewed. In order to get the best results from their research, fieldworkers need to make sure their subjects feel comfortable in sharing all aspects of their life in regards to what they are studying. Anne Fadiman and Joshua Reno both work to build relationships with the people they study through participant observation to gain trust and get an inside look into their social and cultural worlds.…

Fieldwork challenges are salient in both of Mendoza (2008) and Peterson (2011), as both of them have worked with the youth and in classroom setting, and deconstructed presuppositions that both had or encountered. What is interesting, and perhaps related to my situation, is that Mendoza was categorized as doing “auto-ethnography”, which is in my case critical, and thus not showcasing my optionality will be detrimental to my research. Starting with a surface deconstruction of the sign system used to differentiate different groups, and then moving on to elaborate proved to be beneficial in facilitating not just the understanding of the complexities but in offering a two faced theoretical frameworks in presenting these peculiarities pertaining…

My field is education, specifically, birth through kindergarten and elementary education. Education has had a number of issues in the past; some of them still exist today. To narrow my focus, I looked at a number of articles, online magazines, and electronic journals. These included topics such preschool to kindergarten transitions, teacher assistants and driver’s education classes, being a teacher in your mid-career, school shootings, and using technology in the classroom. The vast majorities of these sources are from the ProQuest database and range from articles, magazines, scholarly journals, to Professional journals.…

Throughout much of the research I did regarding the diversity within Harrisonburg High School, I found that many of the numbers accurately depicted what I saw during my first Field Experience. Harrisonburg High School as well as Harrisonburg city in general, are very diverse areas and are home to a plethora of different people with various backgrounds. The graphs above are just a small portion of the great variety of people who attend Harrisonburg High School. The first graph illustrates the different ethnicity groups the students of Harrisonburg High are a part of. The data was collected by the school district and only includes six subgroups, one of which has a population of zero (Hawaiian).…

My experience with the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County is one that I will remember forever. I begin my field experience in January not knowing what to expect nor what would be expected of me. I knew that this experience would help me to evolve professionally, however, I did not know that it would help me to evolve in a social setting. During my time with the Domestic Abuse Council (DAC), I received the opportunity to meet great employees, numerous courageous survivors, and very bright children. It was not an expectation of mine that the survivors would enter into the shelter and leave the shelter so frequently.…

The first word that comes to my mind when thinking about elderly people is knowledge. This is because they are already full of experiences and most of the time they want to give advice to younger ones. On my first fieldwork observation, I had the opportunity to participate in a SNF. According to the course text, here are many strengths and weakness of field research. These strengths and weakness include: validity, reliability, and generalizability. Conducting field studies of behavior is more appropriate than trying to measure behavior through surveys. For example, the counts of seatbelts use or theft by shoppers obtain through observation are not subject to the effects of social desirability that we may expect in survey questions about those specific behaviors. Next, flexibility is another advantage of field research.…

On September 22, 2016, I completed my field placement observation in a middle school classroom located at The Day School. The heterogeneous group of students that made up the classroom have significant cognitive weaknesses in general learning abilities, functional communication, fine and gross motor skills, social skills, self-care, sensory, and physical development. In addition to their intellectual disabilities, many students in the classroom suffered with health care problems, including eating problems, growth impairments, and respiratory disorders. During my visit, the teacher and paraprofessionals provided support to the students with health care needs. These responsibilities included toileting assistance and diapering, food preparation,…
