Elementary Classroom Field Experience

As I reflect on my experiences based on my elementary school classroom field experience and the knowledge I acquired during my LIC 534 class, I can honestly say that my feelings/thought process has not changed in regards to what I believe to be true about teaching. I say this because I hold strong beliefs towards my views on teachings and student learning.
My beliefs still fall into three categories which are classroom environment, a source of knowledge, and self-discovery. As elementary teachers, I believe we set the foundation of education and it all begins with the classroom environment. The classroom environment should provide security, acceptance, and mutual respect. The purpose of this classroom atmosphere is to build/foster cooperative

Through the research I have conducted, I’ve come to the conclusion that social studies is as significant for success as reading, writing, math, and science. It is in social studies that students’ learn skills ranging from reading a map to framing an argument. It is in these classrooms where students’ learn to access the validity of evidence, evaluate conflicting points of views, and apply facts to make decisions or formulate compelling arguments. Literacy and other core subjects are essential for academic growth, however, without social studies how can we ensure or state that our students are receiving a well-rounded education? Furthermore, if social studies teachings continues to be reduced within the classrooms, some strategies I’ve concluded to be valuable is an integrated curriculum, professional development workshops, and standardized testing for accountability. I feel these strategies will position social studies to be viewed as an important and essential …show more content…
It also noted that Elementary pre-service teachers were less likely to student-teach social studies and more frequently persuaded by other teachers to neglect social studies to provide more time for other instruction. I guess my concerns as I approach my internship would be related to encountering or being placed in a similar situation. I wanted to provide my students with a well-rounded education, but how can this be established if after my internship I feel unprepared to teach social studies or any other core subjects? During my field experience I noticed that social studies was not really incorporated into the curriculum, so how am I supposed to build upon such skills? I feel if it wasn’t required of me to teach a social studies lesson, then that particular time would be allocated towards mathematics or ELA. I guess I will have to take advantage of the developmental workshop that I previously mentioned. Overall, due to my field experience, the knowledge I acquired during LIC 534, and research I conducted, I am determine more than ever to rise to the challenges ahead, and promise to provide my students with a well-rounded

Field Experience Journal 3 TAPR I decided for my first observation assignments and journals that I would attend Magnolia Elementary. After all, Magnolia is where I transferred at the beginning of the second grade and stayed for the next four years even though I was terrified of a new school. Reading the TAPR report gave me great insights to my old school. Magnolia Elementary School has a ninety-five point seven percent attendance rate and the students’ performance “met standard” with an academic achievement in the Reading / English Language Arts department.…

Given the increased access to information in the last twenty years, it is shocking to see that social studies taught in the same way as they were taught thirty years ago. Walk down most hallways during the school day, and you will see the glazed over eyes of students that have to listen to facts that will never obtain any type of relevancy for them. This is not to say that lecture does not have it's place, but we really need to involve students in history. The easiest way to accomplish this is through the outlets students already use to show interest in things. Media such as books, movies, and art should be incorporated on a much more frequent basis to help students associate with the past.…

I had the pleasure of observing Wendy Brown. Ms. Brown teaches first through fifth grade special need students. She teaches math and language arts by being a co-teacher, and she also teaches in the resource room. Her students never called her Ms. Brown, but they called her Ms. Wendy. During my observations I experienced how Ms. Wendy taught in a co-teacher setting, how she taught in a resource room setting, and how the students react when things change in the classroom.…

As a middle school educator I know every aspect of my job is going to need me to be developmentally responsive to the needs of my students. The more I understand what is going to be required of me to be the best middle school teacher I can be, I can see my philosophy on middle level education developing. It is not the same philosophy I had when I started and I know it is going to continue to change as I gain more knowledge and experience in the classroom. Middle Schools were created shortly after junior high schools.…

As I enter into my third year of my teacher preparation program at Loyola University Chicago, I reminisce at all the amazing experiences I’ve been able to witness in just a short few years. As I continue my journey as a future social studies educator, I am continually thinking of the challenges that face me in my future occupation. One relevant contemporary issue is teaching about Donald Trump in the classroom. My first thought about the topic is looking at the responsibility of an educator. I feel that as a social studies educator, my job is composed of 2 goals.…

First the student has to listen to the teacher carefully. Next, the student writes down what he/she heard.…

Every teacher has their own philosophy on teaching whether it’s recorded or not, their philosophy is reflected every day in the classroom (Arthur, 2012). By creating your own philosophy that focuses on your beliefs and values the opportunity to adjust and improve your teaching methods becomes achievable and easier because there is a clear vision on what you think is important. In order for early childhood educators to create a reasonable philosophy, knowledge about effective pedagogies and the responsibilities of a professional educator, is a must. It is also important to be aware and understand how young children learn and behave. Early childhood centres are the first schooling environment for young children.…
