As stated in the InTASC Model Core Teacher Standards, Standard 3 addresses Learning Environments. The standard states: “The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.” To me, the classroom environment is one of the most important things that can impact the student’s ability to learn and allow them to feel comfortable within their own classroom. I believe that it is extremely important to form a relationship with your students, and get to know each one of them before you can effectively educate them. By getting to know your students, you are not only getting to know them, but you are also …show more content…

With this assignment, I gained the knowledge necessary to design and implement environmental and instructional adaptations to assist in supporting my student’s academic progress and appropriate behaviors. This assignment was challenging at times due to the severity of my student’s negative behavior, but throughout the class I gained more knowledge in helping to support my student by adapting the environmental and instructional needs of my student. As I worked on completing the Behavior Intervention Plan, I was challenged to first look at the antecedents that may evoke the student’s behavior, and how the consequence may be maintaining the student’s behavior. In this assignment, I found that each time my student would engaged in self-injurious behavior the activity would stop, and we would automatically give her a break. Although, throughout completing the behavior intervention plan, I came up with a replacement behavior that would give the student the same outcome of receiving a break, but requesting it with appropriate work

An immediate intervention that could be used to mitigate Joey’s disruptive behavior is to establish a reward system. Joey’s disruptive behavior is motivated by a need for adult attention that manifests in the form of talking out of turn, loudly and off topic. The antecedents include: interrupting when the teacher gives attention to his classmates, talking louder if he feels he is being ignored, and off topic outbursts when he is disengaged or bored. Since this behavior persists all throughout the day, a reward system that focuses on reducing the frequency of his behavior would be most successful. The potential to spend one-on-one time with the teacher would be a reward that would eliminate the antecedents of this behavior, facilitate his need for adult attention, and have intrinsic value to Joey so that he is motivated to self-monitor his behavior.…

Field Experience at Wildwood and Ernest Manning My cohort of ten was assigned to visit two schools over a two-week period with a full week dedicated to each location. The two schools were Wildwood elementary and Ernest Manning high school and while their relative closeness to one another would suggest that some Wildwood students may eventually be at Ernest Manning, they are opposites in terms of their status, how they carry themselves, and what they believe to be most important for students. Wildwood elementary is an old school as observed from its small and outdated architecture. Classes are small and at times claustrophobic, especially when packed with 20-25 of the nearly 600 students making it difficult if not impossible to navigate the…

Our classroom’s culture focus is on relationship; using positive reinforces toward preventing misbehaviors, and using dignified approaches toward dealing with misbehaviors in such a way that the student is corrected and can learn from his or her mistakes. As a teacher, I use reflection to assist me in proper progressive and non-progressive intervention methods with those who are consistently making poor behavior choices. In doing so, repeatedly until a solution has been…

InTASC Standards 1, 2, and 3 require that teachers are able to understand the importance of knowing their students and creating environments conducive to learning. While in the classroom, it is important that teachers are able to know relay content but to make content relevant in their teaching. Although content is extremely important, it is also pertinent that teachers are aware of the environment and community they are creating in the classroom. Below I have included evidence that demonstrates InTASC Standards 1, 2 and 3. With InTASC Standard 1, I have included a Brain Teaching Target that details different ways to involve students in learning.…

For others, the challenging behaviors occurred as a way to escape from a demanding task or situation the students do not want to participate. For these students, the IEP team and a behavioral therapist developed comprehensive intervention plans to address the challenging behaviors exhibited by the students or to address environmental factors believed to be related to the challenging or inappropriate behaviors. The team used visual reminders, verbal cues, prompting, and positive reinforcement to attend to behavior goals, increase appropriate behaviors, and decrease inappropriate…

The following Antecedent-Behavior-Consequences (ABC) Chart has been prepared for Jackson K. Direct observation was done during his Integrated Algebra 1A class to complete the ABC chart. The purpose was to identify “environmental and contextual variables that support challenging behavior” (Chandler and Dahlquist, 70). There are some consequences that are often related to appropriate and challenging behaviors, some desirable and others not. Unfortunately, oftentimes students that engage in challenging behaviors are removed from the learning environment. This is not helpful because the function of this behavior is avoidance and so the behavior is successful from the student’s perspective.…

By building relationships, the environment changes; it becomes a caring environment in which the students feel comfortable because they feel as though their teachers care for them. By building relationships with their students, teachers are more aware of what their students need and can then curtail their curriculum to the student’s likes and needs which is a high motivation factor (Strong, Silver & Robinsons, 1995). Relationships in the classroom are very important in a child’s learning process. Environments that have positive relationships, which then motivate the students to push forward academically, are what are needed. Uncomfortable settings do not provide an adequate learning environment in which students are able to express themselves.…

However, if collaboration is not supported throughout the school environment, it may end up becoming detrimental. Therefore, it is critical that the learning environment of the school not only promote the collaborative process, but continuously support it.…

Standard five addresses this topic and states that a teachers should “create learning environments that promote high levels of learning and achievement for all students”(ODE, 2005, p. 1). Along with the information I have learned concerning creating a positive learning environment (Powell, 2015, pp. 162-171), all of the amazing teachers who have helped me reach this point are the reason I feel prepared to address this standard. It is obvious when a classroom has a positive learning environment and when it has a negative one. Sadly, during my field experience I witnessed a negative learning environment.…

Classroom behaviors strongly influence one’s ability to achieve academic or social success. When misbehaviors interfere with learning, a number of positive supports can be employed to encourage on-task engagement and classroom participation. Specific interventions can also target problem behaviors or motivate students into achieving the desired behavioral expectations. When students like Doug have difficulties with written expression and copying, they become frustrated when asked to perform tasks that require these skills. Therefore, offering Doug options for demonstrating academic knowledge can serve as a motivator for completing independent assignments and reducing off-task behaviors.…
