Field Experience In Education

Having field experiences each semester is very beneficial for myself as a teacher candidate to learn and see the behind the scenes aspects of teaching. The actions that the teachers, and staff go through before or after the students leave the building to get ready for the next day, week, or month. Teachers need to work together in their grade level to understand where they envision taking their students with the curriculum and standards and materials needed for them to be successful. I got to experience this teamwork in a grade level meeting this semester in the field and learned a lot from it. During part of my field experience this semester I was in a fourth grade classroom at East Hanover Elementary School in Lower Dauphin School District. The teachers in the fourth grade were dealing with a new curriculum called IReady for math and reading, and were learning on the fly …show more content…
They did an incredible job of planning each day together and what lesson, and what practice page, and what assessment goes on what day, and were able to have just about the same for all the classrooms, giving each student in each classroom the best opportunity to be successful.
I learned a lot about working together as a grade team from the couple meetings I attended throughout the semester about how to have a smooth school year in your classroom, you have to have strong communication and relationship with the other members in your grade level. The fourth grade teachers at East Hanover really showed me that, and made it very clear that being a team member instead of trying to do it all on your own is super beneficial and the only way to successfully be a

Field Experience at Wildwood and Ernest Manning My cohort of ten was assigned to visit two schools over a two-week period with a full week dedicated to each location. The two schools were Wildwood elementary and Ernest Manning high school and while their relative closeness to one another would suggest that some Wildwood students may eventually be at Ernest Manning, they are opposites in terms of their status, how they carry themselves, and what they believe to be most important for students. Wildwood elementary is an old school as observed from its small and outdated architecture. Classes are small and at times claustrophobic, especially when packed with 20-25 of the nearly 600 students making it difficult if not impossible to navigate the…

Like so many, I felt an undeniable call to action after watching Davis Guggenheim’s film Waiting for Superman. The film poignantly illustrates the imperative need for a long overdue paradigm shift in American education. In the film, activist, educator and founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Geoffrey Canada, shares the disillusionment he felt as a child upon realizing that Superman was not coming to save him from the perils of his impoverished South Bronx neighborhood. His message in the film is that we must become our own superheroes.…

Building an effective team amongst teachers can be a hard task to achieve. Skuza, (2013) recommends that in order to organize an effective team first and foremost roles and responsibilities must be given to each team member. For instance, as a former retail manager I organized teams upon a certain criteria. One criteria was based upon the individual’s values and goals be that as it may pairing individuals with the same goals creates an environment where all team members are working towards a common goal. That criteria would be different per manager and the situation the team is built on.…

I was one of those passionate teachers. When I first heard of KAST, I immediately knew that I could contribute to the organization. About five minutes from my house, in between Holmes Road and Wornall Road, on 107th street, sits Red Bridge Elementary. A brick school that was not very big, but had a massive playground behind it spanning what seemed to be the size of 3 football fields, Red Bridge taught grade kindergarten through fifth grade. Walking in the front entrance, the office of the principal is straight on your right and there is a hallway going left and right and off of that hallway are two hallways that go straight. Down the right hallway is the younger kids such as the kindergarten and first grade classrooms and down the left hallway are the fourth and fifth grade classrooms. Each day kids pile off the bus into the school to see what the day has in store for them.…

The Power of Collaboration “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is process, but working together is success” (Henry Ford, Brainy Quotes). Throughout the first couple weeks of college, I expected to figure out everything out on my own without help from anyone else. However as it may be the case in some circumstances, I can surely tell you that classes like English 100Y definitely does not hinder the concept of teamwork or collaboration. Throughout the semester we have been exposed to a variety of group based activities and challenges. These collaborative assignments help benefit the students with the capability to attack challenges in the future whether it be in another class or life itself.…
