What was done? On March 14th and 16th I toured Briggsdale School District’s High School and Elementary wing along with the exterior campus to ascertain locations where potential tort liability may reside. On both dates, I enlisted help from different teacher in the district and based upon these tours, I created a list identifying some of the potential liabilities along with possible remediation strategies. This list was shared with the principal and it can be found in Appendix A.
What was learned from this experience? I found these experiences quite enlightening. Briggsdale School District is a relatively safe campus, and to the extent of my knowledge, there has not been any lawsuits filed against it since I have been employed there. When I was touring the campus, I found multiple hazards that could easily result in tort claim. This tour also gave me pause. The extent of potential tort law suits I found around campus would indicate the extent of challenge associated with mitigating any potential lawsuits.

I see any tort lawsuit being targeted in multiple ways—one being aimed at the school’s principals and leadership team. As an aspiring building leader, I need to be vigilant to help alleviate and reduce my and my district’s exposure to litigation. As a leaders is only in one place at one time, this experiences has emphasizes the importance of building the capacity of my staff to help reduce tort liability for my district and staff.
