Cubans then became furious but Fidel soon realized that this was damaging his rule in office and fixed the economic struggle that Cuba was going through (“History of Latin America”). He once had the Title of Premier until 1976, then he was president of the Council of State and also Council of Ministries (“Fidel Castro”). Although his leadership was high, it greatly decreased when the Soviet Union crashed. This drastic event resulted in a decline of consumer goods (“Fidel Castro”). After his daughter had emotionally moved to the U.S. against her father, he then released an ambiguous amount of immigrants to the U.S.A. In 1980 Fidel opened the “Port of Mariel” for 5 months. 125,000 immigrants then raced to the U.S. in order to start a new life and a better environment for their children. Immigrants could only take the clothes that was on their backs and a couple of silverware. In order to become a U.S. Citizen, many immigrants had to go through the process of endless paperwork. Starting a life in the U.S. was hard for a majority of immigrants. Most went into poverty and some took whatever job they could to support their families. (“Fidel Castro”). Due to an intestinal illness, Fidel passed his leadership to his brother Raul in 2006. Fidel held his position of dictator for 4 years (“Cuba”). In 2008 it was publically announced that Fidel was passing his power down. He also stated that he would never accept another presidential term (“Fidel Castro”). “I do not bid you farewell. my only wish is to fight as a soldier for ideas.” (Official Communist Party newspaper).
