After Castro took control of Cuba, he shut down opposing independent newspaper publishers, removed people in the government that opposed him and took away the right to strike from the people (The Good, the Bad and the Monstrous). In 1960, all media and press were censored by Castro, and the communist party controlled what news was displayed (Vail, John J). During his rule, Castro eliminated all sources of newspapers that did not fit his communist views. According to Rachel Schilb, "Castro replaced many representatives with people who were in support of his views (Schilb)." While Castro was trying to impose his communist rule on Cuba, he replaced people in his government that did not support his opinion (Schilb). Castro did not like the fact that people were voting against him in free elections, so anyone that voted against him would be considered dangerous and would be jailed (The Good, the Bad and the Monstrous). During Castro's reign, the law of Habeas Corpus was suspended, and criminals had no right to be seen in court and could be held in jail without a trial (Vail).
