After failing to dislodge Batista’s new dictatorship by legal means, Castro began to organize a rebel force for the task. Hoping to spark a widespread uprising, Fidel Castro led about 160 men in a suicidal attack on the Moncada military barracks in Santiago de Cuba on July 26, 1953.
