Fictional Narrative Assessment

Gary Soto’s “The Jacket” tells the story of a jacket that the author received when he was in 6th grade. The jacket his mother lovingly purchased for him was NOT the kind of jacket he had asked for, and in his eyes, brought him three years of bad luck. Rewrite Soto’s personal narrative as if his mother HAD bought him the neat jacket - “like bikers wear: black leather and silver studs with enougt belts to hold down a small town.” Tell your version from the day the author sees the jacket on his bedpost, to the end of day when he first wore the new jacket to school. (Paragraphs 3-8)

I grabbed the jacket sitting on my bed inspecting it. It looks shinny black and enough belts to hold down a small town. ¨This was exactly what I wanted.¨ I said. Then I knew it was mine.

But just as said this my mom shouts deadly words, ¨your jacket is in the closet.¨ Slowly and sadly I went to the closet scrambling through where there was no other jacket. I went to my mother with the jacket, the one I was hoping to get.¨Their is no other jacket is this one mine.¨ I say. ¨Yes¨ said my mom. Running to my room while putting the jacket on, saying ¨Thank you, thank you, thank

But I still had a sick feeling in my stomach we had our first math test today and I forgot to study. I took the test. Waiting, waiting, waiting. My test finally came back. ¨Yes¨ I say as I got my grade, back that day. I got an A+.

At lunch, everyone came and sat by me. At recess the playground T which stands for terrorist, ¨Nice jacket where can I get one.¨ That was a first he ever said that to anyone. I was starting to think this jacket is lucky. So I went to play kickball and hit a homerun every time.

Back in class all of the sudden BING, BING, BING, the fire alarm went off. All running outside, I grab my new jacket. Walking past all the older kids. Whispers starting filling my ears with good things about me and my jacket. When the fire drill we did the state capitals I was the only one who got all the state capitals right. So then I got a HUGE bag of candy. Every girl came, saying do you want to hang out can we play. I was a magnet that everyone came to.

I through my books on the bed and approached the jacket slowly as if it was a new puppy just waiting to play. I grabbed the jacket sitting on my bed inspecting it. It looks shinny black and enough belts to hold down a small town. ¨This was exactly what I wanted.¨ I said. Then I knew it was

The narrator also accounts, “But that L-shaped rip on the left sleeve got bigger, bits of stuffing coughed out from its wound after a hard day of play. I finally Scotch-Taped it closed… .” Though the narrator is convinced that the jacket is his inanimate nemesis, he mentally toughens up and doesn’t use the rip as an excuse to get a new, better looking jacket, showing that he might regard the jacket as having a sort of sentimental value. To summarize, Soto uses key happenings in the story to accentuate the theme “acceptance is…

Starting first grade I thought we were the top dogs because we got moved down to the bigger playground with the bigger kids. Since they knew we liked kick ball so much they built a kick ball diamond for us. There was just so much to do in the shortest amount of time. Everyday was a new day, I never did the same thing, whether it was playing on the upper part on the monkey bars seeing who could hang the longest or playing football with the guys. I can remember my first year at kickball I was taller than most of the guys because they haven’t hit their growth spurt yet, so everyone wanted me on their team because I was the only girl once again that was better than most of the guys.…

It was a cold and chilly winter morning on November 15, 2014. I wake up to the dads black and white bearded face telling me to get ready. A few dead silent minutes later i drag myself out of bed and put on my olive drab green/camo Under Armour sweatshirt and a pair of snow camouflage pants. I then rush silently up the stairs in the low light morning and put on my dry snow boots, comfy beenie hat then grab a hunter orange coat that strangly smelled of doe urine. My dad walks up the stairs loudly with the rifle in hand and we walk out the door after getting “goodlucks” and hugs from my mom.…

Everyone wanted Mrs. Graham or Mrs. Friend because they were considered the “nicer” teachers. I didn’t really care who I had as long as they didn’t yell very much because it always scared me when they did that. I was the kid who always got upset when I saw that the teachers were yelling or mad at someone. In “A Summer Life,” Gary Soto uses tones of guilt and fear to capture the memory of his six-year-old self stealing a pie from the local grocery store. Although young Soto is aware he is committing a sin, the savory senses of the pie persuade him to steal the pie. The author’s diction intensifies the moral conflict between Soto and himself, first guiltily, then fearfully. Before stealing the pie, Soto recognizes stealing a pie from the innocent grocery store owner is wrong, but justifies what he is about to do by saying sensations such as “boredom” and “the juice of guilt” overcame him.…
