As time churns forward, Dan finds himself sitting in silence on the top stair of the fourth floor, his hands folded in between his legs. Twiddling his thumbs, he stares without expression down at the mid-floor landing. Dan's mind locked in a whirlwind of thoughts as he ponders the events taking place in this direful stairwell. “This can't be real,” he reassures himself out loud. “This can't be. But,” he pauses for a moment as his thoughts begin to calm. “What if it is real and I'm being punished for something.” A low rumble is felt in the stairwell as the voice returns, filling the staircase as it speaks out to Dan, “For your greed, you will let her suffer?” Surprised by the voices return, Dan sits motionless in a sense of distress as …show more content…
He walks away from the elevator with his head slightly lowered as the door slides gently shut. The walk down the hallway seemed like it took an eternity. All of Dan's thoughts are wrapped in an endless blanket of questions, strangling him down as the world around him seems to move in slow motion. The only answer to his questions that made sense to him was once again, Lisa. It is another chance to talk to her, another chance to touch her soft skin, regardless of the outcome. He rounds the corner of the doorway into the room where he sees Lisa lying on the hospital bed, her face slightly sunk in as she looks tired and ill. His heart sunk into his stomach once again. It's an ache he has often felt each time that he has watched this unfold. He walks towards her saddened and slightly nervous as she waves him over to her side with a weak hand. “Oh Dan, it's okay. This comes for us all. Don't be sad. I'm tired Dan, so tired. These past few hours I can feel this growing pain in my body. It aches as though I was struck by a car. It hurts Dan.” She pauses for a moment to readjust herself on the bed. Dan could tell right away how much pain she was in. “I'm ready, Dan. So …show more content…
I could watch her pass away every time. But this time, this time I could see her pain. I almost thought I could feel it. I could see that she was feeling all the pain from the other injuries. It was like her body was a sponge, and it was absorbing all the hurt from the other visions.” “Visions?” The voice questions. “Is it possible they are not as much of a vision as you think.” “What do you mean!” Dan screams from the top of his lungs. His head still resting on the cool block. His patients tiring from the endless questions. “What! Well! What is this place!” Silence enters the stairwell as Dan sits. His thoughts spinning out of control as the answers to this place are no where near his grasp. The thought of walking through another door to see if he can escape this place punches fear deep into his body. Dan stands up with his head hung down low, his body feeling sluggish and sloppy. He takes a moment, and with a deep breath, turns around. In his head, he has no direction. In his heart he has no hope. He slowly lifts one foot in front of the other as he begins to climb the staircase, raising his head to look straight up. To his horror, it was endless. A spiral staircase reaching up into oblivion. Dan's will crushes almost completely at the sight of it all. Chills cover his skin as the voice returns flooding the infinite

That particular scene had began with Phyllis telling Daniel that it’s raining out as they are driving. Instead of responding back, Daniel’s gaze is focused on the raindrops as they are hitting his windshield. The text states, “... he fixed on one drop and followed its career. The idea was that his attention made it different from the other drops. It arrived, head busted, with one water bead as a nucleus and six or seven clusters in a circle around it” (55).…

I read a study last week that described middle children as the most forgotten. It didn’t use those words exactly, but with phrases like “least talkative”, “least bold” and “lack of attention” it’s easy to get the gist. As the second oldest in a family of four kids, I originally agreed with this sentiment. I’ve had more than my fair share of being forgotten by my parents at shops. Twice the amount of all my siblings combined.…

Isolated in a crater, surrounded by deep green mountains, sat Huoron, a squat little town of just over two thousand. On the outskirts lie quaint little cottages with outhouses that were empty now, only to be filled in the summer when people try to escape the ball and chain of modern life. The pure, untainted green of the forest seemed to draw less and less people as the attraction of nature became less and less desirable. As you look further in, the cottage scene is corrupted with dotted factories and tall, nameless buildings that loomed, almost pretentiously, over the humble homes of the little people. Rory Langley was a normal man, about to turn twenty-eight in two months time.…
