Will pounded to a stop and dust came up all around him. He stared with heavily lidded eyes into the dusty green juniper trees.
“Are you out of gas?” Mike asked, squinting against the light.
“I’m done. I can barely feel my legs.” Mike looked at his own tanned dusty legs, inhaled the thick sweetness of the forest, and then glanced back up at Will. “Can you go any further?” “Well I guess I could go a little more,” Will said, wiping sweat from his forehead. “But we still have to go all the way back too.” Mike clapped him on the back. “Alright then, let’s keep going. You can always rest when you fall over.” Will’s haunted eyes shifted up to Mike and looked at him like he wanted to take a bite.
Mike pounded off down the trail and barely noticed.
