Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is found in marine turtles and is a disease that causes the growth of mostly benign tumors (Foley et al., 2005). It was first reported in the Florida Keys in 1938 (Work & Balazs, 1999). The tumors can be cutaneous and can also be visceral (Duarte, 2012). According to Duarte et al. (2012), visceral tumors are mainly identified as occurring in the oral cavity, liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, heart, spleen, and lungs; while, cutaneous tumors are identified on the turtle’s flippers (both front and rear), eyes, scutes and neck. While the tumor itself may not cause a turtle’s death, it can potentially cause issues to arise that do lead to the turtle’s death. For example a tumor that is growing around the turtle’s

CANCER ORIGINS There are two known naturally occurring cancers that are transmissible: Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) and Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (CTVT). Each of these first arose with a single individual as a result of low levels of genetic diversity (Grueber et al., 2011). Instead of having a normal life span, these clonal cells can live well past the life span of its host and cause DFTD in other devils. The transmission of the cancer in devils is thought to happen from direct inoculation of tumor cells when…

This fur coat holds up to almost one million hairs per square inch (Ravalli, 2010). With this amount of hair, the Sea Otter is able to maintain their body temperatures for optimal conditions within the forbidding ocean.…

Rabbit (shope) fibromatosis is caused by fibroma virus, a member of the poxvirus group and was isolated in the United States from a cottontail rabbit in 1932(Percy & Barthold, 2007, p. 258). It produces tumors and is transmitted where husbandry allows contact with insect vectors (Kahn, 2010, p. 1733). Research by Mitchell and Tully (2009) stated, “Clinical signs include subcutaneous, nonattached, wart-like fibromas on the legs or feet and around the muzzle and eyes” (p. 387). The tumors that develop can persist for several months before disappearing and the rabbit can appear to be completely normal afterwards (Kahn, 2010, p. 1733). According to Percy and Barthold (2007), “Rabbit (shope) fibroma virus is regarded as a benign, self-limiting disease…
