The Ganges river is one of the largest and most sacred rivers in the Hindu faith. Located amongst the southern Great Himalayas on the Indian side of the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, the Ganges river is approximately 2,525 km in length, expanding from Northern India all the way to Bangladesh. There are various aspects to the Ganges river that are discussed amongst individuals, such as economical, environmental, spiritual, and physiological aspects.

The mismanagement of river water resources leads to aggravated pollution levels in water, causes the river to run dry and wasteful irrigation. To restore flow of the river, it is necessary to maintain an ecologically-sound flow. An average flow of 51% of river water should be maintained in order to dilute toxins and enable people to access the water safely. It is also necessary to use water-saving irrigation, which would decrease the amount of water extracted. In order to maintain these needs, the best solution is to use drip irrigation. Each day, more than 500 million litters of industrial sources, completely untreated are dumped in the river. This makes it dangerous to drink and bathe knowing dangerous chemicals are filling the waters. It is considered industrial pollution because of hazardous toxins that cause a major human health crisis in the Ganges. To stop this crisis, it is needed of the industrial units to take full accountability of their actions and fix what they have done by submitting an action plan. They should be warned, punished and shut down if needs to be done. I also believe there should be an environmental rights act implemented on the Ganges river and if necessary, a special Ganga police force should be put in place. All in all, industrial pollution should be taken care of by the industries themselves, as it is not fair for the people to suffer from their

The farmers say that they need the water for their crops, as it is one of the only places growing lettuce in the winter, and the government says they need a way to recycle the water as so the river does not run dry. I think that if the water was moved closer to the river, than it could run through the crops, instead of the water flowing in and then staying there.…

Did You know that every day, thousands of Hindus bathe, clean their clothes, and wash their hair in the now polluted Ganges River in India? This was because Hindus would say that the water was sacred because Ganges water was supposed to wash away their sins. The water stayed remarkably clean because of a bacteria eating virus inside the Ganges called bacteriophages. Unfortunately, around the 1980’s the Ganges river started to get polluted because from objects such as dead bodies, sewage, and cancer causing chemicals and the river was not able to clean itself. In 1920 a scientist and water engineer named Dr. Veer Bhadra Mishra realized this problem and wanted to fix it.…

Water covers up more of the Earth than the land that people occupy, and it is a source that people rely on to live. If so, it should be expected that people will take good care of water. If it should be like that, then why is it that water pollution is one of the largest problems in society today? The ever growing human development and the high demands people put on the world result in the buildings of factories which results in increased severity of water pollution. “In some areas, depletion and pollution of economically important water resources have gone beyond the point of no return, and coping with a future without reliable water resources systems is now a real prospect in parts of the world”, (secretariat of the convention on biological diversity, 2010).…

Water is the world’s most critical resource, sustaining life while enabling economic and social development. The necessity of water for human development is highlighted by the copious amounts of water used on a daily basis in agricultural practices and in order to manufacture consumables, process and extract minerals, generate power, as well as process food and beverages. However, many countries now face challenges of growing water demands as a result of not only increased economic growth but also population increases (Mukheibir and Sparks, 2003). Growing pressure on water resources from the human population and economic development has major impacts on social, economic, and environmental water conservation and demand (Walter et al., 2011).…
