To honorably serve my country as a United States Marine Corps Officer has been an aspiration of mine since middle school. My desire and drive to join an elite team that fully embodies and teaches the core values that I uphold myself, is a major reason that I want to become an exemplary Marine Officer. Always striving to become a better individual and reflect upon my experiences has pushed me to attain high levels of academic success and to be placed into a variety of leadership roles. I received the Stephen Decatur Jr. Award from Vice Admiral Barry McCullough (U.S.N. Ret.) and the Surface Navy Association for “Demonstrating the Navy’s [and Marine Corps] core values of honor, courage, and commitment as shown by performance of duty, academics, …show more content…
In the weeks leading up to the inspection, my platoon was far from prepared. My cadets struggled to perform some of the most basic movements and commands, failed to answer knowledge questions correctly, and appeared to lack motivation to move towards superior standards. As a leader, it was time for me to take action, time for me to lead my cadets, time for me to motivate, time for me to create an environment where success is the only option. Effective planning, coordination, and practice with my cadets occurred in order to ensure not only success, but greatness from my platoon. Working hard alongside them, leading by example, staying committed, providing positive reinforcement and being relentless in the face of adversity resulted in a successful inspection. An effective leader also acknowledges and praises the hard work put forth by all participants; I did just that with my cadets. This sole experience reinforced in me that being a leader is far from easy, far from simple, but is most rewarding. Being able to adjust, adapt and persevere for mission completion is essential as a leader. Attaining my goal of becoming a Marine Corp officer will continue to push me further which in turn will benefit those that

As honors students, we thrive on achievements. Tangible achievements are what, for many of us, ensure that we have accomplished our goals. For this reason, when I learned about the “Honor Cadet of the Flight” award at Civil Air Patrol Encampment, I was determined to achieve it. I tried extremely hard and made sure that everything I did displayed nothing less than excellence throughout the week. Because I was so determined to achieve that award, the setback came across disconcerted me greatly.…

Since my freshman year of high school, my passion for agriculture has flourished. I did not come from an agricultural background as my parents worked for the State and Amtrak, but I was intrigued about California’s leading industry. Up until my freshman year in high school, the closest I had gotten to agriculture was when I would grow a garden of vegetables during the spring for fresh produce. I became involved in my school’s FFA chapter and was infatuated with the FFA from the start. I saw it as a way to become involved as well as to expand my leadership and social skills.…

Being responsible is part of being a leader, but what makes a leader a leader? For one, others look up to leaders for guidance and for example. Since they are in charge, they will have eyes on them at all times. Leaders with exemplifying behavior will cause excellent behavior in the followers, because young cadets mirror the actions and methods of those before them. While drilling, a cadet is taught to do facing movements by being shown; no amount of verbal explanation is comparable to a demonstration of a right-face.…

An effective leader is the first one to get up and the last one to eat and the last one to bed. A true leader is someone who doesn’t undertake the strenuous job of leading for the glory and admiration, but for the sense of joy and accomplishment his team feels afterward. Through my experiences with Venture Crew, a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts, I have learned firsthand the definition of servant leadership; putting your groups’ wellbeing over your own benefit. Leaders shouldn’t bark orders or only oversee the work, leaders need to work with their team and pitch in to help reach the goal. When I was as NYLT (National Youth Leadership Training), I learned how to cultivate my ability to be a leader; you have to listen to everyone in the group in order to find common ground to help facilitate the group’s actions.…

As a Marine I have been trained to accomplish the mission; that has always been the hallmark for Marines. From the yellow footprints in boot camp, to becoming a senior leader; mission accomplishment has always been the single most important thing early on in my career. As I matured and came across respectable leadership, I was enlightened. I learned that the commander’s intent, the purpose, was more important than all of the tasks assigned. That’s not to say that mission accomplishment was no longer imperative, but that the purpose to the mission took precedence.…

Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions, what that means is that when you do something, make a decision, whatever it may be, take responsibility for them. Being a leader of any kind, at any level means someone either looks up to you, or they simply look to you for guidance. When you have people under you, or that you are in charge of, you have to be on top of things, know how to handle any situation, and if you do not know how to handle a situation, then know where you can find information on how to handle the situation. Marines past, present, and future all have had to and will have to take responsibilities for their actions. In some way, shape, or form we cannot just try and weasel our way out of a situation.…
