Fever 1793 Book Report

How would you respond when faced with adversity, would you run from it or face it? In the book Fever 1793 Matilda Cook a fourteen year old girl was faced with many problems. For example, her mother got ill with yellow fever and she sent her away with her grandfather. As the wagon was heading out of the city, her grandfather had a coughing fit. Guards examine and prevent all of the ill people from coming into the countryside. Everyone on the wagon passes the inspection except for Grandfather who happens to have a coughing fit. Matilda and her grandfather were abandoned in the middle of the countryside. Matilda’s father died at a young age due to a ladder accident and that left her and her mother all alone. Her grandfather came to help with the coffee house that they owned and the cook that worked there became one of Matilda’s best friends. That night Matilda was waked by the sound of heavy footsteps by the window. There were thieves there and they had killed her grandfather. Matilda got depressed after her grandfather's death. Although she was technically considered an orphan she did not want to go to an orphan house; she was completely alone. Toward the end of the book she finally found her mother. “I dashed across the street without looking’. ‘Mother!” (Anderson 234). Through all of the things she had to face Matilda became a more mature and independent girl by taking care of herself and her grandfather on her own. She learned how to fight her own battles. Would you have responded the same way as she did or would you have left your grandfather there. One thing that the book has taught me is that you can't always depend on other people or things to do everything for you. Matilda has taught how to take care of someone
