What do sustainable cities look like?
Sustainable cities minimise the required inputs of energy, water and food, and waste output of heat, air pollution and water pollution. There are many plants and trees and the community is a friendly area. The people of the community leave a small ecological footprint, which means they do not impact the environment as much.
An example of a sustainable city is Brighton. They use LED lights as normal lights and renewable energy is their main power source. They have increased bike lanes by 20% and commit one week every year where citizens must ride their bikes to work and school. It has many developing areas for housing along with shopping centres such as the Ferny Grove Shopping Village, it has its own Train station and multiple bus stops. There are many multicultural restaurants such as Thai on Ferny way, the Ferny Grove Tavern or QNoodle. Ferny Grove has both a primary school and a high school.
How is Ferny Grove a sustainable community?
Almost one half of houses in Ferny grove have more than 7 solar panels. Solar electricity is the second main source of electricity in Ferny. Over one third of people have water tanks that catch the rain to recycle it to water plants. Ferny groves public transport is in walking distance of the whole area of the suburb as well as a weekly rubbish and recycle disposal.
How can the community prepare for a sustainable future?
Ferny grove should mark certain grassy and plat fields as “Housing Free” which would mean there are more areas for people to run and walk while the native plants and animals are safe from deforestation. The Ferny Grove council should introduce more bike lanes so people are encouraged and feel safe riding their bike on the road. They should create public holidays dedicated to clean the environment and pay people to clean rivers and lakes in the area. They should have an organised buses running straight to the cities
