Ferdinand Magellan's Impact On The World

Ferdinand Magellan, who was known for being the first European to circumnavigate the earth, heavily impacted how Europeans viewed the world. With the findings of Magellan and his crew, people began to realize that the world was much bigger than they had originally thought, and the world was round. In 1480, Rui de Magalhães and Alda de Mesquita gave birth to Magellan in Portugal. When he was younger, Magellan learned many important skills, such as hunting, fighting, and reading the stars, in the royal court. His father often traveled to a nearby town called Porto, a city with a harbor that was full of seafarers; this may have been where Magellan found his passion for the sea and exploration. In the next few years he traveled to different countries around the Indian Ocean to fight in many battles. In Morocco, Magellan fought in another battle, and during this battle, he received his limp that would stay for the rest of his life. While in Morocco, he was accused of stealing; although he proved to be innocent, Magellan’s reputation was destroyed to the Portuguese king. Later, Magellan returned to Portugal to ask the king to sponsor his voyage around the world. Because of Magellan’s previous accusations, he refused the three times Magellan asked. Then Magellan traveled to Spain to ask for King Charles I of Spain approval of his long voyage, who agreed to let him go. On September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail with five ships and about 200 men. His five ships were the Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria, and the Santiago. Magellan traveled through the Canaries and along the coast of South America, where he would search for a passage that connected one ocean to another. As the voyage went on, food and drinking water became scarce. The crew was not happy with these difficulties and started a mutiny against Magellan, who quickly squashed it. Near Santa Cruz, the Santiago crashed on a scouting mission. On October 21, 1520 Magellan found the passage he was searching for, and reached what we now call the Pacific Ocean.
