The feral hog (Sus scrofa) is not native to any area within the United States. The first European settlers were the first to introduce the domestic swine into the United States. The pigs were brought here so that the settlers would have a ready food supply if need be (Ditchkoff and West 2007). Since then the Eurasian wild boar was brought over as a game species and bred with the domestic swine we now have feral hogs in the United States (Brisbin and Mayer 2009). The first domestic swine that was brought over predated that of the first Eurasian boar by just about fifteen centuries (Brisbin and Mayer 2009).
