The Fenians: Terrorists or Freedom Fighters A big question that has arisen is whether the infamous Fenians were terrorists or freedom fighters; however, before we delve into this question we must know what a terrorist and freedom fighter is. A terrorist is a person who uses terrorism (violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. It is best to not come in the way of these people as they will get rid of anybody in their way whether innocent or foe to achieve their goal. An example of a terrorist group would be I.S.I.S and Al Qaeda. On the other hand, freedom fighters are people who take part in a violent campaign to achieve a political goal, especially in order to overthrow their government. For example, a freedom fighter would attempt to achieve freedom for their country by liberating it from their current rulers. I.S.I.S is probably the most infamous …show more content…
The Fenian’s called themselves freedom fighters and they justified this so by saying that that Britain had taken Ireland by force around the 1600’s. They also forcefully imposed their way of life on the Irish, furthermore, they also kept most of the wealth and all political control for themselves. This was what forced the Fenian’s to take more drastic measures to get back their country. This proves that the Fenian’s were Freedom fighters as they were fighting for the liberation and freedom of their beloved country Ireland. This lead to Ireland using weapons to pursue their political goals. Unlike, the terrorists groups Al Qaeda and I.S.I.S whom don’t mind killing and caused many people difficulties especially their own people. They made their own people seek refugee elsewhere, because they felt threatened. The Fenian’s however, tried to help their people by trying to liberate the Irish from the British. All in all, the Fenians were Freedom fighters because they had a cause which was to free their country
