The plot revolves around a middle class African-American family living in 1950’s Pittsburgh. Denzel Washington, who portrays the family’s patriarch Troy Maxson and who also proxies the character for this second time around on screen, the first time being on stage during the play’s 2010 revival. Maxson left his home at a very young age; he got by in his adolescent years as a career criminal, which eventually lead him into incarceration for killing a man during a robbery. The gravity that locks in the viewer’s attention with her grace and will is Viola Davis’ Rose. Troy’s vigilant wife fastens her family together with her commanding compassion as the equilibrium between warring father and son. At times she may act as Troy’s resident doormat in order to serve the greater good, but she never lets herself be victimized, and continues to be a force to be reckoned with in her own right. Davis has already won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supportive Role- Drama, and is the frontrunner for the Oscar as well.
