The author shows how stubborn and inflexible Troy is at page 36 of the book Fences when he says: “ I don’t care what nobody else say. I ‘m the boss …you understand? I’m the boss around here. I do the only saying that counts”. I definitely can relate to Cory’s situation because I was a talented soccer player myself back in Saudi Arabia and was dreaming about a possible professional career. I was hopeful, especially after I got a scholarship to go to an Italian high school to study and also be part of the school soccer team. But my father refused to sign the papers for me to go and even forbad me to continue playing soccer in Saudi Arabia. He wanted me to continue study in Saudi Arabia then attend the University there and help him with the family business; he could not think about a world where I could take my life decisions without his permission. Just like Cory, who defied his father and left the family house to go to the marines, I did defy my father , I told him that I had to leave for college and I came here in US to further my education and learn English. The reason is for not letting him follow his dreams, but instead tried to control all his actions and tried to jeopardize a possible bright future in football. Cory’s deep motivation of doing the opposite of what his father wanted and follow his own path is best shown by August Wilson on page 96 of the book Fences where Cory says to his mother: “ mama… I got something to tell you. I don’t know how to tell you this… but I have got to tell you… I’m not going to papa’s funeral.” And also another passage on page 96 describes his state of mind during his father’s funeral: “I can’t drag papa with me everywhere I go. I’ve got to say no to him. One time in my life I’ve got to say no”. Those two passages show how much Cory wanted to be away from the influence of his father, even in death he would not follow his father
