Troy didn’t really understand the importance of education, but Rose did, which was noticed when she stated, “He'll tell you he ain't talking about making no living playing football,” (8) she believes that Cory playing football isn’t a bad idea. She is trying to get Troy to see that the football could help Cory at possibly getting into a college which could have helped him in the future. Unfortunately, Troy doesn’t want to listen to her. Troy would have better understood the importance of education if the play took place today because today’s people are taught what you can accomplish from going to school and getting an education at a young age. When Troy says, “I can’t read, I don’t know what they had on that paper!” (55) it shows how he uses him not being able to read as an excuse for a decision he chose to make. Whereas if he had a chance at a better education when he was growing up, he wouldn’t have had to use being uneducated as an excuse for his wrongdoing. Education was also brought up in the play when Troy ironically fought for the truck driving position at work when he didn’t even have a driver’s license.
