Terry (2013), explains Freud’s idea that “Castration anxiety and penis envy result from boys and girls discovering the differences in their genitalia; boys conclude that girls are actually boys whose fathers have cut off their penises, and girls are jealous of boys” (pg. 54). This idea that men fear their fathers are going to cut off their penis is just absurd never have I heard a boy say such a tall tale.
The second theory that is also less prevalent to sex offending behavior is the Routine Activities Theory. Terry (2013), states that sexual behavior will not occur “if they feel that the opportunity to commit the crime presents too much risk, if the reward isn’t big enough, or if too much effort is required” (pg. 63.) Experts will claim that criminals who commit sexual acts such as rape break into home or will commit the act in public like at parks. Traditional theories like life course theory state that a behavior will stop if a major life change happens like marriage or having children will stop the behavior. However, with sex offenders it is the opposite it may increase their behavior. Another problem with applying theories to sex offenders is that there are all different reasons why they commit the acts. For example, to some it may be a learned behavior instances in their own life may have taught them how to commit acts. For others it may be physiological there may be some miss conception in the brain that makes them think the way they do and they cannot be reasoned with or taught to believe
