Women are treated and expected to follow a certain set of norms in most literary works. The short stories “Mr. Parker” and “Boys and Girls” the mothers are both stay at home moms who want their daughters to do things the way they do. In “Boys and Girls” it seems like the father does not appreciate the work that the girl does around the farm, but in reality he had to. A salesman says that she could not be the real help, since she is only a girl. The men in this story were put down as to show more how the girl felt, not how these men would actually act. In “Mr. Parker,” Jane’s mother stops her from going to Mr. Parker’s for piano lessons because his wife died. Mr. Parker was a professional that studied at Juilliard and worked on Wall Street. He never showed any signs that he would do anything to break the mothers trust. The father in this story, tries to argue with the mother, but is shot down, and forced to allow his daughter to stop piano
