I believe the black feminist art movement is no longer or seen as very useful today, as it was in the 1960’s and 70s. The black feminist movement did help some black female artist to fully achieve the equality, respect, a voice and the inclusion in the mainstream American art world they expected or hoped for. Despite the fact, black female artist have flourished by gaining some access to mainstream museums, galleries and art schools, it is assumed their careers and personal life would be more successful if they where men.
The purpose of this study is to address the marginalization of black female artists and the absence of a post black feminist art movement. In order to understand the dynamics of the black feminist art movement throughout the years, I found it necessary to interview five black women of different ages, stages in their careers and from various locations in the United States. A series of questions where designed to be asked of each artist to focus the narration of their own story about the black art feminism movement, racism, sexism and how these factors impacted their art and personal
