Pontellier say to edna that she needs to care more for her children. A good mother would do anything for her children and will always take care of them unlike Edna Pontellier. In The Awakening, Madame Ratignolle and Edna are complete opposites when dealing with children, Madame Ratignolle is an example of what a mother is suppose to be and Edna is not. Being a good mother and wife is a requirement during the nineteenth century. A women has to be innocent and faithful especially when they are marry. Hughes states, “ ...not even allowed to speak to men unless there was a married woman present…” Hughes’ point is that an unmarried woman cannot talk to a man if no marry women is present because the unmarried woman is innocent. In The Awakening, Edna is not faithful to her husband when she is alone while her husband is out. She starts to build a romantic relationship with Alcee Arobin and she loves Robert Lebrun. Society will not be please if they hear a woman do something like Edna is doing. Men say that their wives has some illness causing her to act different than usual and they need some rest. They do not notice that oppression is causing women to act
