Feminism “We want equality!” a passionate feminist yelled, starting a chant among the crowd of women’s rights activists. Feminism is defined as the social, economic, and political equality of the sexes. This movement has been dated back to centuries ago and still continues today throughout society. Some call feminism brainwashing, others call it genius. Personally, I believe feminism is essential and shouldn’t even be second guessed. Equal rights were once mocked and now they are snowballing into creating change and that is something to celebrate. However, the effect needs to continue. He set up a camera system and had a female friend walk through the streets of NYC, and his goal was to see from a women’s perspective how it was to walk alone. In under 10 hours, the women was catcalled 108 times, and was followed twice. Now, the message of the experiment was this: a casually dressed, single women walked alone and was nonconsensually sexualized by over a hundred strangers. People she didn’t even know turned a young women into an object for their own desire. This is one of the biggest problems of today’s society and why feminism is needed. Women of all ages are degraded and sexualized by men who think that we exist only to please them. When we speak out about it, we are told that “boys will be boys” and are questioned of our attire, as if that would stop the gazing eyes of strange men. Sexualizing women has also led to the fact that mothers of young children are seen as disgusting when breastfeeding in a public place. Moving from North America over to the southern countries of Ethiopia, Ghana, and other low class areas, the struggles change. There is an 11 year old girl and her name is Zola. Zola’s parents died due to illness and infection, and she is now responsible for the life of her little sister, who is 3. Because Zola cannot get an education due to her gender, she is forced into prostitution to make money, which causes her to become pregnant. Zola’s life is cut short due to her living conditions and the fact that her body could not take the pregnancy. This is a true story that happens every day in the countries of Africa. But if we were to rewind, and if Zola were able to receive that education, she would’ve had a much easier life. However, this is not the case. Young women, as young as 5 years old, are seen as objects, only created to please the men. Girls are sold into human trafficking, undergo pregnancy, genital mutilation, and marriage before they even turn 10. Feminism would be the perfect start in these countries. This movement would give the young women the life that they deserve. Sadly, non-conformists in support of feminism are seen as criminals and are often killed.
