Many people think they know what feminism is; regardless of any previous opinions one may have, the reality is that feminism is “the belief in the need to secure, or in the commitment to secure, rights and opportunities for women equal to those of men” (“Feminism” paragraph 1). Pink should be their favorite color and they should want to play Barbies and dress-up. A girl is seen as masculine if she would rather play with fake guns and a G.I. Joe and a man is seen as feminine or strange if his favorite color is pink or he would rather play with a Barbie then play Alamo. When do we teach men not to lay a hand on a woman? Remember terrible childhood lessons taught to children and take a hard look, for example, at the classic Disney cartoon Beauty and the Beast. The lesson portrayed to little girls is that it is okay if their boyfriend is cruel, distant, and abusive so long as he loves them; the lesson portrayed to little boys is that it is okay for them to be cruel, distant, and abusive so long as they love their significant other. Women are at a horrifying disadvantage and society needs to step up and educate men before intimate partner violence rates rise even higher. Already, it is the leading cause of physical injury to women ages fifteen to forty-four; thirty percent of women and three percent of men in the population of the United States murderers are a result of intimate partner violence (Anderson paragraph 1). Girls are taught to kick where it hurts and run if they are approached by an opponent so that when that little girl is twenty-two with a skirt on and walks to her car with her keys between her fingers, just in case, but forgets to check the backseat for the man in the dark, it is her fault because she was wearing a skirt and she did not take enough precautions. It is the fault of the whole of society. Misandry will not neither end nor solve misogyny, for they are parallel to each other and should both be abolished. The prior is a point many “feminists” fail to acknowledge in their slander of men and their will for women to rise to the privilege men currently hold. The education of men (and women) on proper treatment of other human beings and equality is imperative in order to view a brighter future of society. True feminists wish for the equality and mutual respect of the two sexes in every aspect of society, not the throne of feminine
