Feminism In 'Run The World'

There are many celebrities that proclaim themselves to be feminists. Whether they be actors, actresses, singers or rappers they do some part in addressing feminism. There are many songs that are created just for this topic at hand. Beyoncé, one of the biggest icon in the music industry identifies herself as a feminist. Her along with other artists such as Lady Gaga, Pharrell, and so on, create songs that shed a light on the concepts behind feminism. Beyoncé has created several songs that symbolize feminism. “Run the World” is one song that expresses the idea of feminism and how women should unite and stand together. Firstly, gender is an important role that is displayed throughout the song and the music video. To start off, Beyoncé sings, “I know when you were little girls you dreamt of being in my world,” this emphasizes that from such a young age, girls look up to ideals that are unrealistic. Girls are often influenced by the ideology of beauty that seeing such a famous artist on the TV, or on billboards is someone they hope to be one day. As Josée Johnston and Judith Taylor explain in their article Feminist consumerism and Fat Activists, “the cultural turn has…influenced feminist scholars to problematize the aesthetic ideals surrounding thin and fat bodies,”(Feminist consumerism and Fat Activists, Johnston, Taylor). This quote is a great example of the lyric “we teach girls to shrink themselves to make themselves smaller.” This can be taken both as a literal and figurative statement. In the literal sense by saying to girls to shrink themselves is saying that thinner is better. The ideal women is a thin women with a thinner waist and thinner legs, or a size two.
