Anthony used social activism to present their ideas and to inspire other women. Elizabeth Cady Stanton is considered part of the first wave of feminism. In Seneca Falls, Stanton spoke at the Declaration of Sentiments in 1848. As an equality feminist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton delivered her speech, “The Solitude of Self,” which defines people as a soul, as gender is insignificant. As individuals and citizens, she calls on men and women alike to see past gender. She calls being a mother and a wife incidental, as they do not define a woman. They are secondary characteristics that should not dictate a woman’s life. In the 1970s, women like Gloria Steinem, became the face and important of the feminist movement. In her “What It Would Be Like If Women Win,” Steinem presents the idea of social equality and the end of the repression of women throughout society. Critics received it as fantasy and she even referred to it as “utopian,” as many of the disadvantages women face are structured within the institutions that support our society. From an early age, girls are taught to play differently than boys and to become more domesticated. These differences plague a woman all of her life and push her into the home and to motherhood.
